Battier has really soft skin or something. I've seen him pouring blood from his head at least a couple times before this.
I believe he was cut aroung the same area before thus making it more vulnerable to be busted open again.
That area of your face is very prone to being cut wide open when hit. This is why you see many boxers being cut over the eye, and also why you see trainers smearing vasoline over the eyes. It prevents a "direct" blow, and thus, makes an eye less likely to be cut open.
