This is what annoys me. Sure its a tv show and its all made up but we accept that in this reality the Stargate exists etc. There is no way this overweight nerdy guy who has been living with his mother would be carrying on like he is after what happened to him in the last 24 hours. The show has tons of potential but the characters and the character back stories could of been done a lot better I think.
This episode was intriguing. Spoiler They are making folx into almost stereotypes. They Actually make the Dr. somewhat humane then turn around and strip it all away He has become totally untrustworthy. At this point, I'd throw him off the ship and take my chances. Eli - the stereotypical Nerd Pining for the hot girl that is with the Athlete/pilot/alphamale/
Rush didn't do anything wrong. His actions are contentiously being questioned. He never said he was making a sacrifice on deciding to stay on the ship. He knew the planets we're nearly uninhabitable and he would rather take his chances with the ship. I still hate they are dragging the SG name through the mud with all this nonsense drama. It might be some people cup of tea, but the majority of this show has nothing to do with the SG program or sci fi. SG1 lasted for 9 season's because they took years (several seasons) to build character development. SG:U is shoving all the character development in just a few episodes.
I actually like it better this way. I'm sure the drama and whatnot will slow down the more they know about Destiny and their situation, and more exploration like typical Stargate will ensue. However, I expect the cinematic style to continue which will make the exploration part of the show that much better, IMO. They're moving away from the 1-2 episode timeboxes and serializing the show in a similar fashion to things like Lost, Flash Forward, etc.
I caught last weeks and this week's episode which were pretty good. Going back and watching the first three was boring in comparison. I wasn't a regular follower of the Stargate series, but this show does fill a void missing from BSG. I think they need to up the pacing a little, which was an annoyance I had with BSG. Right now the cast is finding itself. If it gets into the right direction, it could live up to its potential.
I am still 50/50 on it, I like the promise but some of the characters and character development has annoyed me. I don't think you can get upset with them using the SG name, it is very smart imo. As more of a drama it is different from the other versions and in doing so could pull them more viewers who have never watched any SG, equals more ratings and DVD sales of SG1. It also means by adding it they have two shows who clearly by name have the back story in them, thus avoiding the need for Universe to explain all the Stargate history.
Dr Rush comes off as a poor man's Gaius Baltar [IMO - after all the crap he pulled. . there was NO WAY Baltar should have survived the whole series. . . . I don't get how killing O.G. Apollo and Mr Gata but not killing Baltar] but . .. i digress. Mr. Lt is suppose to be Alpha Male - Sgt Sheppard/Capt O'Neal but in 4 episodes he's had to be save twice already . . . Rocket River it is not a homerun
I thought the whole "lottery" episode was really good. Emotionally powerful. But, again (I mentioned it in the "V" thread), I think they could have covered the first 7 episodes in about 2 episodes. It needs to pick up the pace and trim the fat on the large cast. Kill off the senators daughter for a start. It'll be good for shock value. And it will improve the show, in my opinion. And Eli needs to quit being so over the top. I am not as upset about the serialized format as others. I love having some continuity like LOST or 24. Makes you not want to wait until next week to see what happens. That isn't my gripe about the series thus far. But I am going to stick with it, because like Rocket River said, I am a Sci Fi junkie and a Stargate fan. I remember not likeing Stargate Atlantis for about the first half of its first season, too. And there were eventually parts of Atlantis I liked more than SG-1.
Agree on killing off the senator's daughter. Or maybe just horribly disfigure her. Maybe they can pick up a hot 'alien' chick if they feel like they need some kind of romantic twist. I love Robert Carlyle, I just haven't warmed to Rush yet. The whole 'maybe he's a bad guy with an ulterior motive' angle is a weak, at least the way they're setting it up. "maybe he KNEW about the sun replenishing the ship's fuel!"...come on.
Of course he did. Rush (thinking aloud): Wow! This ship is one giant solar panel! Let me go run and tell everyone..... (stops)whow... I won't tell anyone. I'll let them continue their lottery and hope chloe and scott get picked, so i will never have to hear from these annoying kids again.
This seems to be a new theme with TV shows. I actually look forward to watching V, but sometimes I stop myself and realize how flawed it is too. There seems to be no creativity coming out of hollywood these days.
I think V still has time to grow, it's only been 4 episodes and it at least seems like some kind of alliance is forming. I would like it to step up when it return.
They as directionless as the ship itself Dr Rush is a poor man's Gaius Baltar The Colonel is just a poor man . . . Honestly . . .If you BORROWING someone else's body . . . you get to use him to bone ya wife? . . . well . . don't be mad when ya wife wants some of the magic stick later on when u unavailable. Only person that is halfway interesting is the overly angry gruff black dude . .who has not real personality Asian Chick - goes from googoo eyes at Daniel to being a lesbian not to mention . . she a high muckitty muck of China yet she and her parent are apparently Asian Americans [The chinese were hesitant with YAO but their primary contact with the stargate program has suspect loyalties???] Rocket River
Its been pretty uneven so far in my opinion. I don't mind the focus on character developmeut I do find it how annoying how much they copy BSG down to using the gritty film format and even handheld camera. So far the episode called "Time" was the best and really shows how you can use the memes of sci-fi (time travel, alternate realities) create some great drama. I also like the idea of switching bodies as plot device but think they can do more with it than just character development and excuse to get some sex scenes in. I think it is still working on hitting its stride and give it a chance. Also I only watch it on Hulu and noticed there hasn't been a new episode yet. Does anyone know if there was one last week on Sy-Fy or is it going into hiatus?
I think they didn't kill off Baltar because he was too freaking awesome. I have watched much of Flash Forward, SG:U and V. And I rank them in that order. Flash Forward seems to be the best - best acting, most interesting underlying plot, decent character development thus far, and some violence. It has some annoying parts, characters though, no doubt. I've tried not to be too critical about SG:U. Too much copying of BSG? Sure. Some fairly stupid characters and mediocre plot twists? Yep. But mindlessly entertaining. V I'm about to give up on. I find the acting to be mediocre (FBI lady, Part of Five guy) at best and tragic (the son/girlfriend V) at worst. There's nothing new or fresh about the plotline. Not that any of these series are believable, but to the extent that it is at least remotely believable that aliens could visit our planet, everything about how the series projects it would happen is not believable (they're aliens, yet they are human?).
