    Yeah, who needs families?

    I'm in agreement with you that people shouldn't get married just because they think it's conventional or because everyone is supposed to, but if you think about it, there are substantial positives to getting married, not just negatives. You somewhat deter other men from hitting on your wife, tax breaks, the aforementioned little "family" thing, and you make a woman that you love very happy.

    I think too many people are getting married for the wrong reasons (the need for approval of others, money, getting old) and that's why divorces are so common and acrimonious and makes marriage, in practice, such a dicey proposition. But getting married for the right reasons is a whole different ballgame. If two well-adjusted adults want to be with each other for the rest of their lives and want to share their genes and raise strong, healthy, kids together, there's nothing wrong with marriage.
