It's not a defense. It's basically a condemnation from a libertarian perspective. But it sums up my feelings on Rick Perry in this race pretty well. Both his supporters and his critics are focusing on Rick Perry the myth. Rick Perry the man is much smaller, less inspiring, less offensive, and less polarizing.

No, I'm all for a strong federal government, it's surprising to me however that someone as committed to States' rights as Perry would be too on the two key issues to him---apparently, gay marriage and abortion. Because, you know, if two men kiss, the Union dissolves.

If we were to leave out Rick Perry's name and party affiliation, there might actually be some debate in this thread rather than partisan trolling.

I'd never vote for Rick Perry (I voted for Bill White hoping that he'd win and the state government would be in deadlock), but I agree with him on ending lifetime tenure for federal judges, and on repealing the 16th and 17th amendments. In my opinion, governing should be done on the state and local levels. Repealing the 16th and 17th amendments would ensure that by removing some of the federal government's taxation power and re-establishing split power between the states and people in Congress (so that the House and Senate act as checks on each other). The rest of his ideas, on the other hand, I disagree with. The changes regarding gay marriage and abortion discriminate against people on moral grounds, something I feel the government shouldn't do. And I think it would be dangerous to give Congress (the most powerful branch) the power to override the Supreme Court.

At any rate, at least he's talking about making changes to the Constitution. It seems like now-a-days politicians would rather have Congress pass seemingly unconstitutional laws (without a whimper from the President or Supreme Court) than to govern within the limitations our ancestors put on the state and federal government so long ago.

    Thereby reducing his own power...strange.

Or I should say, believing in states' rights is a weird position to run on in general. I don't think revamping the Constitution sounds good ever, and much less at a time like this when there are much more pressing issues that need attending to.
