HERE IT IS, THE FIRST HIV+ MUPPET

South Africa's Sesame Street community on September 17, 2002 welcomed Kami, a fluffy five-year-old orphan living with HIV, in the government's latest effort to stem the AIDS pandemic ravaging the country and the continent. Education Minister Kader Asmal was the first outsider to hug Kami, a lively bear-like Muppet with a passion for nature, after her public debut at Cape Town's Groote Schuur Hospital, the only one in the country offering drug therapy for children with AIDS. Kami is seen in this undated photo. (John Barrett/Reuters)

not to trivialize the situation in Africa, but doesnt Kami look like Marcie the next door neighbor from "Married With Children"?

Wow, she does look like Marcy!!!

On the BBC News this morning (90.1) they did an "interview" with Kami. It was pretty neat.

I do have to ask one unfortunate question though -- how long will Kami be around? I mean, children with HIV will die of AIDS at some point I assume. Are they going to carry this that far as well? It is so sad to see the devistation of that region by this virus. I'd hate to see the sadness spread to the children's TV show.

However, a significant number of young girls in Africa are contracting HIV because there is a widespread belief that having sex with a virgin will cure you of the disease. So female children as young as two are being raped by uncles, stepfathers, cousins, strangers... nice, huh?
