You shouldn't be, the media attention given to this is unbelieveable...people eat this crap up and love to be afraid. It's like watching a horror movie. Wake me up when this actually kills a US citizen, or 30 for that matter...that's how many the usual flu strains kill in a year. So far this 'pandemic' flu is just a media driven snowball that all the sheep are buying into.

    Baaaaaa, Be afraid! Baaaaaa! LOL.

Well, it actually has killed a U.S. citizen.

    Just one, though.

    23 Month-old, in Houston.

Taken From an LA Times article...

The increased level came as the swine flu outbreak in the United States spread to four more states overnight, bringing the total to at least 92 cases. Texas authorities also announced the first U.S. death from the new virus, a 23-month old child who died in a Houston hospital.

Are you talking about the 23 month old that died here at TCH that was flown in from Mexico City? Or was that some other 23 month old?

Did not realize it was flown from Mexico City. That's funny. You see no mention of that....

I think that 23 month old was actually a Mexican kid that was flown here. It was the first death in the US, but the child was a Mexican national visiting relatives or something(?). They're closing down schools here in the DFW area from what I understand. I know there have been 2 or 3 cases reported here.

My hospital has a protocol for the Swine Flu. No telling how many hypochondriacs we'll get in for this, but so far, I've already personally been in contact with two "flu" sufferers. It's seriously doubtful that they had the swine flu, but as per our protocol right now, everyone that has flu-like symptoms has to wear a mask and be held in an isolated room.

As far as I know, we have sent a test out for one person, which I'm pretty sure came back negative...

Yeah man, I hear ya, but your statement is a perfect example of what I'm saying...

"Some kid died, not sure where, just heard it...see it's killing US people already...not sure just some place in Texas or something...."

That's how the panic spreads...ambiguous facts, but not all of them.

The one death from this flu in the United States was an infant that is a Mexican national. The child was very ill and visiting family in Brownsville and had apparently brought the illness with him. He became even more ill and was transferred to the Houston Medical center where it had already progressed into pneumonia. The child then died. There has not been an actual death of a US citizen from this flu.

The only deaths have been in Mexico, or at least contracted in Mexico, and many of the deaths are "suspected" to be caused by the swine flu, very few have been confirmed.

It got upgraded to a level 5 pandemic because the flu has spread into the US population and has been contracted IN the US, not just brought in by someone from Mexico. Most people in the US have suffered a fairly mild version of this flu, however there have been several hospitalizations.

The local girl in Fort Bend County that attends Episcopal High school apparently got sick last week and has already recovered. The lab tests were only confirmed today however.

It is very simple. Wash your hands and avoid sick people. If you do get flu like symptoms with a fever, get to the Doctor to get your antivirals and you'll almost be guaranteed to be fine.

From what it sounds like, as I research this a little more and more information comes out, I believe this strain has been going around for weeks. The fact that the girl in Houston was sick late last week says its been here at least a little while. I bet most people that have gotten this type of flu have been treated normally and have recovered. It only has gotten international exposure due to the deaths in Mexico attributed to it and the fact that those deaths were in relatively healthy people. It seems that anyone that seeks proper medical care in a reasonable amount of time, that may not have been available to those in Mexico that died, has been fine.

I cannot deny this. I'm usually the one who is listening to those that are misinformed....

I had vaguely heard the story, and looked it up, as I typed that (should have typed it after I looked it up...funny thing, though, I had heard or read no mention of the child being a Mexican national). Everywhere up here simply reported it as, "The first US death from swine flu has ocurred in Texas...."

LOL. Exactly, that's how I heard it too. The media tries to do it's best to keep everyone thinking the worst...keep them coming back for information...
"First death in the US! Keep checking back with us, we'll keep you posted!!!!"

I wonder how many more folks are checking news sites and watching news stations b/c of this. The media is loving it...and they'll do all they can to continue the panic as long as people keep feeding it.

Well, technically, that isn't wrong... lol. It was the first death in the US of this disease and it did happen in Texas. :D

They shut down the entire 80,000 student-strong Fort Worth school district after they found one confirmed case among their students.

All the schools will be closed at least until the 11th.

Closed the entire Cleburne school district, too, but they don't have any confirmed cases yet, just some suspicions.

I can't help but think there might be at least a little bit of overreacting going on.

I'm thinking a large part of this is CDC and WHO showing off their new heightened pandemic detection abilities, along with not taking ANY chances from previous "mishandlings" of major emergencies.

I dont have tooo much problem with this being being an overblown national fire drill. If anything it at least raises awareness and preparedness that it could happen. And who's to say it cant if history's shown past events occured the same exact way. Back in the propaganda filled '50s they were doing the ol' duck and cover.

Girls are alright, just avoid police....okay that was wrong and not funny.

My Mom and I were actually talking about that earlier, that they could be taking this opportunity to implement and test all the pandemic alerts, level raises, and emergency preparedness on a relatively small outbreak to get ready for a really big one. Like a "fire drill" as you said.

Almost like they can test future responses based on how well they get this one done.

Or because of all the hype that eventually ends up looking like a massive overreaction, nobody pays any attention when a real threat hits and thousands more die.

Seems like there was a story about a boy and a wolf or something that touched on that sort of thing.

Most people I know in Austin/UT are going out this weekend. Swine flu just makes a great conversation-starter ;)
