i don't understand the hype over joss whedon. what do fans like about his shows? ie what are the typical elements of his works that are liked by his fans?
Whedon is also good at avoiding cliches. In most shows, the Hero almost never kills people or hurt people for sport. It is always the bad guy accidentally falling over a cliff or the Hero forced to kill the bad guy only out of self defense. In Firefly, villains get killed all the time. Here's a taste of Whedon's sense of humor (*Spoilers for the Shindig Episode*) . . . . . . . Mal (the good guy) had just won a old fashioned duel with swords. He stands over his wounded opponent, refusing to kill him. Mal: You know, they say mercy is the mark of a great man. [stabs the man in the stomach] Mal: Guess I'm just a good man. [stabs him again] Mal: Well, I'm all right I guess. Spectator: You know, you didn't have to stab that man. Mal: I know, it was just funny.
I liked the movie very much. I went in exclusively cause I was in the mood for some sci-fi...no idea what to expect. I never watched Firefly, and I have only watched a half dozen episodes of Buffy, and wasn't over impressed, so I am definately not a Whedon true-believer.
Get the series on DVD, it is the best show ever put on TV....simply amazing. What makes it so good is the characters....they just seem like regular people and they just work. DD
It makes sense that Major Mal would like a movie about Captain Mal. Buffy didn't do much for me either. I prefer Firefly, which has the humor and character development of Buffy, but with more grit and realism.
I love Joss Whedon's writing, but I never did catch onto Buffy or Angel simply because it revolved around subject matter that has been beaten to death (vampires)... but the episodes I have watched I liked the chemistry of the ensemble casts and the whitty dialogue, which is something Joss has incorporated into all of his productions. Like said above, Joss always makes his "good guy" really, really flawed which is something that makes it more realistic even if the character is based on something out of this world. I like (not love) Sci-Fi (Star Trek Voyager) and love Westerns (Tombstone) so the mixing of the two on Firefly made it amazing for me.
Finally saw this today. Holy crap! It was awesome! Brought a non-Browncoat with me, and he loved it, too.
I finally got around to seeing this the other night. It was fantastic. If the series isn't revived, I'm at the very least looking forward to a sequel. Anyone know how much it's made?
