It is based upon a canceled TV series, and Universal did an underground marketing campaign...AND....it is only out in 2100 theaters....a full 1/3 less than flight plan. Box office numbers I think the movie will have legs as word of mouth continues to be so strong. Kind of like Austin Powers, which did OK at the box office, but gangbusters in DVD sales. Right now it is one of the top 200 movies of all time, rankings wise, on IMDB, and everywhere people are giving it great reviews. DD
I gotcha, I didn’t know it was in so few theaters, I thought it had a wider release on it’s first weekend.
My wife and I started watching this series over the weekend, and up to episode 6, I would say that it's a slam dunk. I am slightly OCD, so I will watch the entire thing and read the comic that supposedly bridges the gap between the series and the movie before I go see the flick. Glad that it got so much hype, otherwise I would have missed out on a good series.

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/externalreviews That is a great spot for reviews, almost all positive...Serenity is rated as the 119th best film of all time with a stellar 8.6 rating at IMDB. WOW !! If you have not seen it go now. DD
I might be missing something...but on the main page it has a 8.6 rating which would put it in the top 25...yet on the list it's at 119 w/ an 8.1
of all time? hhhhhhhmmmmmm ,. .. . that seems high but then again . . . I have to look at the list Rocket River
w00t I first saw the trailer after having seen the first three episodes at a friend's house. I love what I had seen so far, but the trailer worried me. I was afraid that Serenity would be just a dumb downed action movie because of the River scenes. In retrospect, I see they did this to appeal to a wider audience. The movie itself was fantastic and the River scenes were very well done. Most importantly, they weren't overdone. In many ways I felt this movie was about Mal and not River. He's definately one of my all time favorite heroes.
Rave reviews....this movie is one of the best I have seen in a long time....I hope word of mouth carries it, because good movies like this should be supported. DD
I'm three episodes into the series and should have been in bed two episodes ago... which of course means it rocks.
You can check out the first nine minutes of the movie here: http://video.vividas.com/CDN1/3929_Serenity/web/index.html This is totally legit. It is part of movie studio's ad campaign. I've watched it on Explorer, but it didn't work on my Firefox browser. The first nine minutes of the movie is mainly story exposition which introduces the main villain. The rest of the movie isn't all so serious and violent. You can check out a whole bunch of cilps here: http://serenitymovie.com/nonflash_site/video.html I think these clips are more representative of the movie's witty, Han-Soloesque humor.
Thanks vwiggin. I've watched the series over the last week and was very impressed. Looking forward to seeing the movie.
Yep, but the movie is great.....I think that is part of what hurt the series, it just sounded like a dumb premise, but when you see it, you get it...and the writing and story telling are superb. DD
