You will enjoy the movie even without watching the TV series. The story is easy to follow and the action and dialogue are very entertaining even if you don't know the backstory.

But if you watch the DVDs, you will freakin LOVE Serenity and make all sorts of funny noises at the movie theater. I guarantee.

It was a lot of fun. My only real complaints were the plot inconsistencies with the series(Simon didn't rescue River, the Tams had been on board way more than 8 months) and one of the deaths. I know why Joss did it. He wanted to up the stakes so that you really didn't know who would make it out of that final battle alive. But it felt cheap and undignified. That character deserved to go out like Spock at the end of Wrath of Khan, not Trinity in Matrix Convolutions.

Still, I enjoyed it. I went with four friends who all had a good time as well. Only one was a Firefly virgin(his only exposure to the series was watching "The Message" right before the movie), but he liked it a lot.

I read a comment by Tim Minear somewhere in which he expressed interest in directing a sequel. I'm not sure if he was being serious or not, but the guy was heavily involved with Firefly, plus he and Jeffrey Bell did some outstanding work on Angel when David Greenwalt and Joss Whedon bailed to work on other projects.

Will it have hot chicks? Most Sci-fi stuff has hot chicks.

I'm headed to see this tonight at 10:20 in Webster... can't wait. I've caught a few minutes of various episodes of Firefly on Sci-Fi and from very limited views I loved it... I plan to pick up the DVDs in the next week or so, but all the stores I've been to are sold out, guess people really want to back story before it came out, lol.

    The movie was great
I liked it alot. . . . [never too much Gina Torres. . . LARRY FISHBURNE BETTER WATCH HIS BACK!!! :D]

    I read Scott Card's Review
and I must say . .. it is what i hate most about Sci Fi guys
they get so fricking SNOBBERY about things
This is SCI FI . . THIS ISN'T SCI FI
    blah blah blah . .. yadda yadda yadda . . .
The narrow the field to their particular point of view
dismissing anything they just happen to not like
    *BLAH*

I still have not read ENDER'S GAME
but i listen to Shadow of the HEGEMON . .
it was pretty good. . . . Not Ground breaking but good

    back to the Movie
    I liked it alot. . . nice ending. . .

I hope the next movie focuses more on Jayne
he is funny as hell to me . ..

Favorite Episode [though I have not seen them all]
    "A Man name Jayne"

Glad you liked the movie. :)

I wanted to see more of Jayne too. That guy is freaking awesome. Every time you think you've figured him out, you see him reveal another soft spot ("Make something up, don't tell the crew!")

Ender's Game is much better than any book in the Shadow series. Give it a shot!

Yeah, well like I said I never heard of this firefly series but the preview of the movie caught my eye as something i might like (gotta love a self depreciating but eventual baaaaaaad man hero - i always thought if i were a 'hero' it'd be one like Mal/Han Solo). How great it was to see him square off with the clam assassin guy and at least give SOME back - even when he was taking the worst of it. Loved it. I'll definitely check out the series on DVD! Good part is my daughter can't stop talking about how good it was - she liked the whatshername scenes (oh yeah - River) where she's stomping serious butt. Can't disagree with some of you about the serious hotties (although that's between you and me :)).

This was a great movie, and definately keeps you craving for more from the series and any future movies.

Haven't seen it yet, but it looked pretty good from the trailers. Does this movie look like it's on pace to be the next 5th Element? I remember when no one really had high hopes for that movie. Then it came out and I think it's one of the best sci-fi movies to date.

Just watched the movie tonight and it was....great.

Usually any sappy scenes is a huge annoyance to me, but the director kept the emo parts to a bearable level. Also, there was the "cool" factor that I notice movies like to do, and this movie too, but it also was kept at a reasonable level.

Anyways, onto the good parts. This movie is FUNNY! It has some basic jokes, but also many unexpected, laugh-out-loud jokes, and frankly, those jokes are the best because it's like a bonus, you never see it coming. Characters were surprisingly great for a fairly no-name cast. Story moves at the perfect pace and keeps you engrossed. Only knock on the story is that it is a fairly generic storyline, with familiar ups and downs. But since it is so entertaining, I really didn't give a damn.

This movie... rocked. I remember seeing the trailer and thinking to my self, wtf, has Hollywood sinked this low. It just didn't seem like a "blockbuster" type-ish movie, more like a sci - fi original type. Even then, from the trailer it seems cheesy and well just going to be plain bad. I was wrong, this movie is awesome.

As someone who never watched a single episode of the Firefly series (though might do that now :) ), I have to say the movie is very accessible. There's a lot of information in this movie and I know I probably didn't catch it all, but the filmmakers did a nice job of making this universe understandable to non-fans. I'd say the only weakness in this area was that while I knew some of the characters, having not seen the show I didn't know them all, nor did I know which character were from the series and which were created for the movie. This unfamiliarity also generated a slight lack of empathy towards some characters I didn't know well (and the movie didn't develop enough). The only other weakness was that a number of times it had more of a sci-fi tv movie feel than a feature length theatrical film. So I was sketpical going into this movie and through the first act. But the film gets progressively better with every scene and every act, and by the end, I was on the edge of my seat. And while I didn't know the characters too well I was still sadenned and schocked at some of the deaths. Overall a pretty awesome movie.

Yeah, I have to admit some of the characterization is a little weak. Serenity/Firefly has a big ensemble cast, so it is pretty hard to develop each character in the movie without making it into a three-hour borefest.

But thanks so much for giving this movie a try guys. :)

    I saw it Friday night.

Pretty much along my expectations. I was entertained.

I think I would have enjoyed it better had I not seen most of the series. It was mostly on par with the regular episodes, but at a much more frenetic pace. I prefer more of a build-up.

It was a good movie, no doubt, it's just I would prefer the series to come back more than I would a sequel(of course I'll take what I can get).

Oh, I also hate being around people at a movie theater. People suck.

A lot of people I tried to drag to the theater initially didn't want to go.

Their objection is, "I didn't like Buffy and I heard Serenity is made by that Buffy guy!"

Whedon is most known for Buffy, but he has also contributed to the scripts of Toy Story, Speed, and Titan A.E. He is responsible for a lot of the dialogue in those movies, so if you enjoyed them, you would love Serenity as well. :)

Another objection I hear is "But I've never seen the series before, I won't get it."

Serenity isn't "hard" sci-fi that requires any type of complicated setup. Here's a rave review from two Salt Lake City DJs who never saw the movie before.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about this flick but why do you all think it did so poorly at the box office? I mean Flightplan is hardly a blockbuster
