Another thing to look at it, even just using base demographics of "white voters", this affects Obama differently in different states. In SC (and probably much of the deep south), this may hurt Obama if there continues to be such a strong white/black split. In California, on the other hand, Obama was tied in white vote in the most recent poll, but struggling with hispanic vote (3:1 against). So there, Obama may very well benefit. At this point, who really knows how this plays out. Just another wrench in an already crazy election.

It could be, but that seems the less likely alternative.

To me, Edwards was a message candidate based on populism and the "two Americas" theme he's used so often in the past. His identity was rooted in ending poverty. When you look at the other two candidates, Obama's primary theme is about unity, which is why he's appealed so well to both blacks as well as the well-educated whites. On the other hand, Clinton's campaign has been almost exclusively about the economy, which has resonated incredibly well with <75K whites, her base.

I think, more than anything, this campaign is about money and the economy... and to me, regardless of endorsement, that means Clinton benefits from Edwards' departure.

the cat could very well be right

The working class and lower educated vote will most likely go to Hillary and the "change" vote going to Obama.

Granted it is a broad stroke, but it's not unreasonable.

that must explain why the vast majority of the people who comment in political news articles on CNN are militant Obama supporters. Obviously the lower class don't have the time nor money to get a computer. :D

I can't believe the bias towards Obama from the media, especially CNN and MSNBC.

It's not really an entirely liberal phenomenon, though - for example, after the Iowa caucus, you had conservative pundits like Laura Ingraham who couldn't stop gushing about Obama.

Not entirely a political phenomenon, either. Some people hate their own "species" (excuse me for the lack of a better descriptor) more than anything else. For instance, some of Yao's nastiest detractors are hard core Chinese TMac fans.

This is actually pretty easily explainable if you look at the democraphics of Obama supporters - they tend to be younger and more educated - which fits perfectly the profile of people who will scour online websites for political news.

Edwards supporters are a little harder to pin down:

Interested in fighting for CHANGE: Favors Obama
Interested in FIGHTING for change: Favors Hillary
    Anti-Lobbiest: Obama
    Poor: Hillary
    Interested in the Economy: Hillary
    Anti-Establishment/Washington: Obama

Etc. I guess that helps to explain why he had such a solid 10-15% base of support that didn't seem to go away as he fell further out of the race.

This has to be among the greatest tragedies in modern U.S. election politics.

The manner in which he comes across...Lawyers usually don't notice that trait...

I think this is terrible news for Obama even if he manages to pick up Edward's endorsement.

"Four in 10 Edwards supporters said their second choice in the race is Clinton, while a quarter prefer Obama, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo poll conducted late this month."
