No, I firmly believe that many, MANY voters switched over from Gore to Bush this time around. My Aunt who lives in Kansas City, MO, is a great example. After voting democratic in every election to date, she switched and voted for Bush this time around because she had no idea what Kerry stood for. How many articles and threads did you guys post about how new turnout votes democratic? Your posse definitively stated that new turnout votes democratic. If that is in fact true, then my position that a LOT of voters switched from Gore to Bush is in fact true. There is no owning up to do.
i considered sigmund...but admittedly, i'm somewhat prejudiced against sea monsters. are you in houston still??
was gonna see if you wanted to meet tonight to catch a drink and the Rockets at Live. some other time. by the way...Pittsburgh is a wonderful city..... FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!
But for somewho is Pro-Life the stakes were high as well...I mean you gotta admit that B_J...when we actually believe that 4000 people are being killed a day by this...I mean, its huge who those Supreme Court Judges are... And maybe it shouldn't be. It seems like whoever is in control of the Supreme Court gets to control truth. I blame it on a lack of liberal education in our nation's colleges.
And my mother voted for her first Democrat. I know a lot of Republicans who crossed over this last time out. You're wrong again, by the way, to lump me in with people who insisted new voters would trend Dem. I probably cited that conventional wisdom from time to time but I never confidently asserted it. I also went back and forth with No Worries about the fact that Rove was out registering new R's in the heartland and that he shouldn't be over confident of D's winning the new voter race. Post election I traded posts with thumbs regarding Rove's success at energizing the base to make the point that Bush's victory was less a case of the middle shifting and more a case of the GOP succeeding in getting new voters to the polls. Kerry didn't energize the base so many of his voters stayed home. And yet he still picked up votes rather than losing them as you intoned. You might "firmly believe" Gore voters crossed over, but that's not what you said. What you said was that the shift in percentage was proof they did. It wasn't. You were wrong.
Would have been fun. Next time. Have you been to Pittsburgh? It's actually pretty cool and it's doubtless prettier than my hometown of Houston. We also have an alright football team out here.
So the pro-Lifers are "supposed" to include a blanket concern for the war dead, but the anti-War crowd is not "obligated" likewise to be concerned about the aborted children of the last 30+ years (which dwarf the numbers of war dead).
Those articles were right in their assessment of past trends but incorrect in their forecasting of the future trend w/respect to the November election, as previously stated. Your theory remains invalid however.
I'm concerned. I just don't see legislating another war, this time a "war on abortion" to be the answer. It's all the same, trying to end violence with violence.
And my mother voted for her first Democrat. This also was the first Presidential election that I voted for the Democratic candidate.
Attorneys are resourceful people (when not surfing internet message boards 4-5 hours per day). Sam please provide me with a breakdown of how new voters voted in this election. If you can prove to me that more of the new voters in this election voted for Bush, I might consider revising my belief that many democratic voters switched over to Bush in 2004.
How do you have a war on abortion? How about a ban on unnecessary abortions and a Life Choice for every unborn child whose carriage to term would not put the mother at risk, or and maybe cases of rape and/or incest?
giddyup: We've been around the abortion thing a number of times here and I'm not sure we need to do it again, but I'll give you my capsule take. Abortion is a very difficult issue for me. I'm not squarely in either camp. I believe both sides are right and both are wrong and I don't think anything will ever resolve this issue such that I will think differently. That said, I think the strength of one's convictions regarding abortion comes down to when you believe life begins. twhy believes it is tantamount to murder to use a condom. That's one extreme. Another is to believe it begins when a baby is born. In talking to my strict pro-choice friends, I have asked if they would be okay aborting the second trimester, then the third, then the day or moment before birth and then after birth. No one is okay with after birth, almost no one is okay with days before birth, not many more are for last trimester, but it all goes to when you believe life begins. If you've used a condom, you've committed an abortion in the eyes of some. Even if you don't use any birth control, you probably have a less strict interpretation than twhy. I do not have an opinion on when life begins. I also believe that, in the case that Roe is overturned, abortions will continue (as they did in the 70s) and that rich women will have them overseas in hospitals and poor women will have them in alleys. I am also very uncomfortable with the government making such deeply personal decisions for its citizens, and that extends to suicide and euthanasia too though I recognize the difference from abortion. As such, I have no choice but to advocate leaving that difficult decision to the woman. It is difficult for me to choose a side in this issue, but I don't kid myself that my decision there in any way compares to the decision every single woman makes regarding abortion. As for the ones dying in Iraq, there is no question their lives have begun. There is no question that the vast majority of them have families and friends. While there may be a question as to whether abortion or birth control is murder, there is no question that an unarmed family whose house is bombed has been murdered. And now that we know that none of this needed to happen to ensure the security of the United States, now that we know that these people have died and continue to die because we were willfully misled by our president, yes, I would think pro-lifers would be angriest of all.
But wait, I thought all those polls were undercounting the liberal youth vote because they didn't have landlines? bwa ha ha ha ha Bush picked up a ton of new voters from the 2000 election. Heck, just look at his margin of victory in the popular vote. It was something like 4,000,000 when it was all said and done. I saw a great signature on another website the other day. It's worth sharing. LOSE THE ELECTION LOSE THE BUMPER STICKERS I still get a good chuckle out of some of the stickers I see. My favorite: If you aren't appalled by our government, then you haven't been paying attention. Way to encapsulate condescension, arrogance, and hatred into one bumper sticker, liberals. Very nice. How'd that work out for you, by the way?
Nice semantics. But we all know the prison industrial complex would be thriving even more, like it has with the failure known as "the war on drugs". Let's not hijack this thread with abortion talk now.
I'm pretty sure there aren't stats on that but if there are I'd love to see them. Meanwhile texxx, since you 'firmly believe that many, MANY' Gore voters went Kerry, maybe you could expain where Kerry picked up so many new votes.
