MIAMI -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was in critical condition after he was shot at his Florida home Monday, police said.

Miami-Dade County police officers were dispatched to Taylor's home at about 1:45 a.m. and found him shot. He was then airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said. He didn't know where on Taylor's body he was shot.

The Miami Herald reported paramedics found Taylor with a gunshot wound to the groin. A family friend who did not want to be identified told ABC-TV 10 in Miami that Taylor was shot twice.

A brief statement from the Redskins said Taylor was undergoing treatment at the Miami hospital and that police were investigating. His family has asked that no information about his condition be released at this point, said hospital spokeswoman Lorraine Nelson.

Taylor has a home in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay that he bought for $900,000 two years ago.

Taylor, 24, is in his fourth season with the Redskins after playing at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003. He leads the team with five interceptions but has missed the last two games with a knee injury.

In 2005, Taylor was accused of brandishing a gun at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight that broke out after Taylor and some friends went looking for the people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles.

Taylor reached a deal with prosecutors last year after they agreed to drop felony charges against him. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in the assault case and was sentenced to 18 months probation.

The man, Ryan Hill, also sued, seeking at least $15,000 in damages. Hill suffered bruising to his body, incurred medical expenses and lost wages because of the fight, the lawsuit said.

Redskins' Taylor in Critical Condition After Shooting

MIAMI, Nov. 27 -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was shot at his Florida home early Monday morning and hospitalized in critical condition, police and relatives said.

Miami-Dade police officials said police received a 1:45 a.m. call from a woman inside Taylor's palatial residence in the affluent suburb of Palmetto Bay, saying that a man had been shot. Ambulance crews found the 24-year-old defensive star struck in the lower extremities, Lt. Nancy Perez said.

The Miami Herald said the woman who called police -- apparently Taylor's girlfriend -- said intruders were trying to pry open the back door of Taylor's yellow one-story home. When Taylor went to investigate, he apparently was shot, according to the account given to the Herald.

"It could have been a possible burglary, it could have been a possible robbery. It has not been confirmed as yet," Perez told The Post. She said she could not say how many shots had been fired or whether there were signs of forced entry.

Taylor was flown to the Ryder Trauma Center of Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was undergoing surgery. Perez said police had not yet been able to speak with him.

"Once he comes to, we can actually put the pieces together," Perez said.

Members of Taylor's extended family from the Miami area converged at the hospital to keep vigil. One relative, Ed Hill, said Taylor remained in surgery as of late this morning, and had been shot in the leg.

A woman who said she was Sean Taylor's grandmother and was reached by telephone at the home of a relative said, "He's doing pretty good. He's in critical condition. That's all the information I have."

At Redskins Park in Ashburn, team officials said they were praying for Taylor, and would wait for more details on his condition before commenting further.

The situation "is not good," one official said.

Coach Joe Gibbs and a chaplain addressed the team, players said, and they waited anxiously for more news.

"This is not just a member of the Washington Redskins. We're talking about a dad, a brother, a friend of ours, and that's where we're at with this right now." safety Pierson Prioleau said. "Our prayers go out to Sean and his family."

Jason Rosenhaus, one of Taylor's agents, declined to comment.

In his fourth season with the Redskins, Taylor leads the team with five interceptions so far this season and is one of the team's brightest young talents. He missed the past two games -- including Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- after spraining his knee during a Nov. 11 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The son of the police chief in Florida City, Fla., just south of Miami, Taylor grew up in Florida and starred for the University of Miami's football team. Taylor was the fifth pick in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft. After leading the Redskins defense last season with 129 tackles, he was named to the Pro Bowl.

Taylor, the second of four children, continues to live primarily in Miami, near family and life-long friends. In the year after he was drafted he often stayed with his mother and great-grandmother in their modest house in Homestead, Fla.

As he rose through the ranks of football stardom -- from prep standout to college All-American to pro -- he earned a reputation around Florida City and Homestead as a good natured and family-oriented person. He readily agreed to make community appearances and frequently donated money to organizations that help the poor.

Police on Monday were interviewing Taylor's girlfriend and several other relatives who were in the home to try to determine what precipitated the shooting. It was not immediately clear whether the people were relatives of Taylor or of his girlfriend.

The sprawling four-bedroom residence sits behind a few palm trees and a white masonry wall about six feet high. Two black-painted metal gates control entry to the curving drive. Taylor once kept pit bulls, but has since gotten rid of them, neighbors said.

Neighbors on either side of the house said they had pleasant relations with the young star. "He was nothing but a gentleman with us," said one. "He would sometimes talk over the fence with us and it was always 'yes ma'am, no ma'am, yessir.' "

Neither neighbor reported hearing the gunfire during the night.

Taylor, known as one of the hardest-hitting free safeties in the NFL, has a tattoo on his biceps that reads "Steel Standing." He has earned the respect of his Redskins teammates and coaches on the field and in the locker room, overcoming a series of incidents that had threatened to undermine his career and which caused him to shun media attention.

Taylor pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery charges in connection with a June, 2005 confrontation over an all-terrain vehicle he said had been stolen from him. He avoided jail time in that case by agreeing to serve 18 months probation, speak to 10 Miami-area schools and donate $1,000 to each of them.

In 2004, he was arrested in Fairfax County on suspicion of drunken driving. A judge later dismissed the charge, after viewing a videotape of the field sobriety test and seeing no basis for the arrest. Taylor was nevertheless convicted of refusing to take a breathalyzer test in that incident -- but that conviction was dismissed on appeal.

Taylor was criticized for skipping off-season workouts against Coach Joe Gibbs's wishes in 2005 and was fined $25,000 by the National Football League in 2004 for not attending a mandatory rookie symposium.

In January of 2006, the league fined Taylor $17,000 for spitting at Michael Pittman during a Redskins-Buccaneers game.

But teammates say Taylor has matured in the last 18 months or so, perhaps in part because he has become a father; he reportedly dotes on his 18-month-old daughter Jackie.

Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams told The Washington Post in October that Taylor's personal growth and development resulted from "a lot of tough love behind the scenes."

"I love him," Williams told Post columnist Mike Wise. "I think he's one of the most passionate football players I've ever coached. But he's very guarded."

ESPNews just reported that Taylor's wife reported that he is clinging to life and that doctor's are worried about possible brain damage and even death. No link but they just interrupted to give that update on ESPNews.

No kidding.

These days, it seems that if you have any kind of success in this world, all you are doing is setting yourself up to be a target.

This is a symptom of a much deeper, much more serious cultural and social problem that had better get fixed pronto or things are going to get much much worse.

This is ridiculous. It is highly likely he did put himself in the situation. He's been a bad apple with a bad attitude for awhile. It's no coincidence that these types of things don't happen to the Shane Battiers, Matt Schaubs, Derek Jeters, Alex Rodriguezs, etc. Tank Johnson, the linebacker Foley, Sean Taylor, Pacman Jones, etc. are constantly putting themselves in these positions.

Clearly hes a "bad apple" as you put it and deserved to be shot at while in his own home and possibly bleed to death...

the media and people like you presuming he deserved this makes me sick.

just try and imagine what his wife or son are going through right now.

Well I've never heard of Sean Taylor before but this incident reminded me of Dunta Robinson being tied up in his own house earlier this year. I don't know Dunta or what kind of lifestyle he leads, but that is some scary **** no matter who you are. I really can't imagine what taking two slugs in the nuts feels like.

If I was in the NFL, I guess I would take pains not to flash money around. Covering myself in ostentatious wealth just ain't worth it when there are so many apparently desperate people watching. I don't know if that's what these guys were doing or what, but clearly these guys were targeted because they play in the NFL.
