"Monument To Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston" I find it funny and sad at the same time that an artist has tried to create a piece of art that he thought would be a loving tribute to motherhood and pro life sensibilities (Edwards is pro life) but instead is being criticized because of the pose he chose to sculpt her in. Seems the pro lifer crowd has a problem with the "buns up" position because it's not the traditional "missionary position" they regard as "normal." *sigh* same as it ever was
Oh yeah that's right! PETA has a problem with the bearskin rug! [edit] what don't you like about it giddy?
She was buns up kneelin' I was wheelin' and dealin! she surrendered to the feelin' And started into squealin'
We have yet to hear from the Natonal Association of the Blind, have we? I have no problem with it... From the article: "When some bloggers heard about the exhibit — “Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston” — the gallery said it received about 3,000 e-mails from around the world in just a week, split between anti-abortion and abortion rights opinions. “We also got calls from Tokyo, England, France. Some people are upset that Britney is being used for this subject matter,” said gallery co-owner David Kesting. “Others who are pro-life thought this was degrading to their movement. And some pro-choice people were upset that this is a pro-life monument.” I'm just "surprised" that you only chose to poke fun at the Pro-Lifers...
Do you not find it ironic that it’s the pro lifers that are upset at a sculpture that supposedly glorifies pro life? But you're right! Each person sees a piece of art differently. That’s the beauty of art.
My problem with it is that from reading the article it seems he picked Britney out of the blue which reeks of trying to use her celebrity status to draw attention to himself. Maybe she did give permission or is pro-life herself which wouldn't make it as bad, but just deciding to make a nude statue of a person that has nothing to do with your cause seems kind of low class to me. And adding the sexual undertones to it (they are there wether you want to admit it or not) doesn't really help.
Edwards completely admits the sexual undertones of the piece. He's pretty well known in art circles before this piece. ------------- Edwards prior gallery show, which ran during September 2005, was called "The Ted Williams Memorial Display with Death Mask, from The Ben Affleck 2004 World Series Collection." The main element of the exhibit was Edwards' sculpture of a "death mask" of baseball great Ted Williams, depicting Williams as he now exists -- in a cryonic slumber. Williams' actual head is stored in a metal container filled with liquid nitrogen in Scottsdale, Arizona's Alcor Life Extension Foundation, which claims to be the most advanced cryonics service in the world. Edwards gained some notoriety for the exhibit because some mistakenly believed the death mask was a casting from the actual frozen head of Ted Williams. Dan is a classically trained sculptor from New York's Graduate School of the Figurative Arts, and his notable public sculpture work includes The Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy Memorial in Indianapolis, of which groundbreaking ceremonies were performed by President Clinton and Senator Ted Kennedy. He also has works in the permanent collections of the National Art Museum of Sport in Indianapolis, the Las Vegas art museum, and the Indiana statehouse. http://www.send2press.com/newswire/2006-03-0324-004.shtml
So I've googled myself silly tee hee this week and cannot find a picture of the other side of the sculpture, is there baby head? arm? tail?
Well, aren't we pretentious today! Sheesh, some of you guys are taking this thread waaaay too seriously. 1. It's a hangout thread, not a D&D thread 2. It's Britney Spears! Are we supposed to take anything having to do with her seriously? Not me, baby! Can certain people here not see the humor in all of this? Did anyone here not at least get a chuckle when they saw that picture?
