How much more wooing did she need? She was in the gang of six for months and the entire purpose of that process was to get her vote. You're just wrong here. They did everything in their power to get Snowe, not just to get to 60, but so they could call it a bipartisan bill. The pressure was too strong from the GOP leadership for the Dems to pull it off. I fully expect it will be the same with Brown on any vote of consequence.

The final Senate bill was exactly what she wanted. In fact, it was even more conservative in that she had offered to support a triggered public option instead of none at all. She ended up voted against because she claimed the process was too fast - despite it being the longest debated bill in Senate history, with many of those months spent directly negotiating with her. I think it's pretty clear, at the end of the day, she got sucked into the GOP machine to vote against the bill. In theory, it was her dream bill from her comments during the negotiation process.

In reality they didn't need her vote any longer and stop pushing for it. Once Lieberman flipped the pressure was off. I'm not saying that it wouldn't take a ton to convince Snowe OR Collins OR Voinovich to flip. It would have. I think Nelson was the best of a set of bad choices. But the opportunity is still there. There are GOP Senators retiring in Missouri, Ohio, and Kansas for instance. Any of them may be pressured into flipping as they have no reelection prospects to fear and their states are hardly GOP strongholds.

It's not like there's no precedence here. Half of these Senators have flipped on their health care vote already -- what's flipping back going to take?

And it's not like I'm making up Brown's centrist/liberal record. He was a State Senator for a decade. He bucked the Massachusetts GOP on many issues -- like health care. Why would he not do so for a national party that trends even further from his platform? I don't think he wants to be a martyr. He took the Tea Bagger's money to support his campaign. If he wins he will do what he has to in order to stay there. That does not include continuing to kowtow to a group with no influence in his state.

That's just not true. They never stopped pursuing Snowe. That's well documented. And getting Snowe was never about getting a 60th vote nearly so much as it was about making it a bi-partisan bill. It couldn't be done precisely because of GOP pressure to filibuster as a bloc. It's funny that you keep bringing up Snowe and health care since HCR (and the public option) were very popular in her home state; Snowe and HCR specifically disproves your thesis.

What exactly could the Democrats have offered? The bill had everything she wanted in it. It was basically entirely the bill she asked for.

He maybe talk about being independent, but his voting record is far from it. He's voted with party on 24 out of every 25 votes over the last few years.

the real irony in a win for brown is coakley will have lost for the same reasons hillary lost, a since of entitlement to the seat

The Dems just need to tell Republicans to bring on the filibuster and set up some cots. Or they could just get rid of it altogether in the rules.

What is interesting to me is that the people have basically voted in a guy to stop healthcare from being passed and democrats are trying to figure out to get it passed anyway.

I guess nobody cares whether the people want this or not?
