In many cases when a long 6'11 player stands straight up and keeps his arms straight up he has made a good defensive play - that's what Andersen has going for him on that end. Andersen should be a much better defender than Scola.
brad miller was having the night of his life. scola has to guard 5s and 4s, he gets out muscled by the 5s (nene) and isn't quick enough for quick 4s. his d aint bad, but he has to guard people he normally wouldn't because of our lack of a true 5
I can't recall when Scola has taken the more potent offensive weapon when both he and Carl are on floor. Maybe it happened when Carl was in foul trouble or something. Am I mistaken?
You are definitely not mistaken... most of the time Carl takes the good offensive player. Something I have noticed is a few times when he and Chuck are together they put him on the taller person, and let Chuck "roam"... but that causes major issues imho. Much like when they put Trev on the good player and let Shane "help"
well andersen didnt use his athleticism, but more of his HEIGHT. At least sc-ole can make wide open dunks.
Not really when Scola and Landry play together Scola will cover the opposite center while Carl will defend the PF. Neither play the best oposite offensive player fron long stretches, when they play a team with a great back to the basket guy, Hayes is the one, getting the majority of the minutes defending them. Landry is not a good defender at all and average rebounded but he can stay in front of quick Bigs but Landry is always abuse by any strong post player.
I don't believe that is true, unless the PF is a very good offensive player (e.g. Nowitzki). Which, again, speaks to Adelman's lack of confidence in Scola's individual defense. As I remember it, Landry was put on Nene. Landry was put on Duncan. Against Orlando, Landry was put on Howard. That's how I remember it. Does anyone remember it differently?
He's the slowest guy on the team in terms of speed, lateral movement, quickness, etc. It's pretty obvious when you see him play defense. Just in this case, there is not as much help defense.
All 3 guys, Scola, Landry, Andersen, are simply terrible defenders. But Andersen is the absolute worst. Andersen gets by because he plays against our opponent's 2nd unit and most NBA 2nd units do not have a decent low post offensive option so Andersen gets by. If he were playing against our opponent's quality bigs, he would barely get 8 minutes without fouling out. He is absolutely horrid. Next, on the list, Landry. He is one step above horrid, and falls in at absolutely terrible. Just a terrible low block defender against any kind of post up big man and not very good from the perimeter either against the shooting 4s. Next up, Scola. He has intelligence and moves his feet. He has some instinct. But he has very poor athleticism and because of this, he gets burned all the time. He is terrible defensively. So, there you have it. Andersen - absolutely horrid Landry - absolutely terrible Scola - terrible THEY ARE ALL WORSE DEFENSIVELY THAN CHUCK HAYES IS OFFENSIVELY. HENCE CHUCK SHOULD BE PLAYING 40 MPG.
I agree. But Andersen has some excuse, he's rookie and is playing against centers (being a real PF). I'm pissed with Carl because he plays with with so much energy on offense but he uses the defense to rest. He plays with no intensity and no focus at that end of the floor. Maddening. All in all, terrible inside defense. Because Chuck is better but is hugely undersized. And none of them provides minimum intimidation.
He's never been a good defender, I just think the whole team is worn out. This is what I was afraid of with trying to play this style.
Why couldn't chuck hayes be 7'0" instead of Andersen, Andersen is a waste of a big body and Chuck would be so much better if he was taller.
I disagree. i think Landry is not an instinctive defender but has been working hard on it and has improved. His low post defense has improved as he holds his position better and contests shots with athleticism. He's not elite by any means but he is better than scola these days.
Not really. He is just more athletic, which is why when it becomes apparent that a big man with athleticism can burn Scola, Landry usually takes that player. Otherwise, he just is a slightly better blocker, that alone doesn't prove him the better defender. Scola is still the better defender, he can usually boxout guys to get the rebound and while not great against the postup against more athletic big men, he is quick enough on his feet to get to the wholes in the defense, nearly anywhere around him. Also him being bigger then Landry helps him contest a lot of shots better. Although, Landry is improving, he is by no means the best defender out of the Scolandry duo.
