Don´t be delusional, Scola was always a great rebounder, he may not be in this league because of his athletism, but he was back in europe, right now he is 13 in the league for rebounds, 12 for rebounds per 40 and per 48 mins with many players with averageing under 25 mpg ahead of him. Plus he is 12 in the league in double-doubles in his second year in the league and very likely to end in the top ten by the end of the season. He is just 4 double doubles away from the 10 spot. (occupied by Yao and Bosh) We are lucky to have him for that bargain price.
You guys know that Scola steals rebounds from Yao and Yao is nice enough to let him do it. If one day that switch inside of Yao's head is flipped, nobody will steal another rebound from Yao!
If Luis played with Howard I don't think his numbers would be as good. Dwight would beat him to the ball, he beats Yao to the ball because he has a better reaction time than Yao.
Because of Yao, and mainly because players that deserve less shots are or were shooting more than him. (Artest, Brooks, Rafer, Wafer) Too many blackholes in our team from time to time, and Scola is still a new player and not fully respected by his teammates, if he got the ball half the times he is open the "fronting yao" won´t be an issue.
It's kind of funny everyone's saying how Yao's a bad rebounder. I mean, he's only SIXTH on the leader board this year. If you go by "per minute" stat he and Scola are about the same. The reason why people think Yao's bad at rebounding is because he looks so awkward going for the ball. But he really isn't.
I think it has more to do with him being stripped or out rebounded by smaller player all the time. If he had hands like Scola, he would have Howard type numbers.
This may be the case, but it doesn't take away from the fact that Scola is still beating the opposing players to a lot of rebounds every game.
I dont know about one of the best, but he always seems to be in the right place at the right time. But, if that is the case, I guess that makes you a good rebounder if you know where the ball is going to go...
everyone that plays with yao can get quite alot of rebounds because yao box out well on the defensive end. he also gets so much attention when posting up. if he misses his shots. scola and landry are alot of times left alone to get offensive boards. i don't know how landry and scola would do on other teams but they definitely benefit from the attention that yao gets and also yao's shear size when blocking out.
Well, Kelvin Cato was a beast on the boards. Trb% might be a better measure of how well a player rebounds in this case when players' minutes vare so much from game to game. Cato in 01-02: 15.7 Cato in 02-03: 19.7 Scola in 07-08: 14.6 Scola in 08-09: 17.0 Considering, Scola plays much further away from the basket and ALWAYS runs the break, I think he is the best rebounder on our team right now (Yao's trb% this season is 16.9).
No doult Scola is the most active Rox player on rebound. However, he need Yao push the opponents away from the paints, and most of his rebounds Yao can also get, but Yao chose save his energy. The game against Spurs, when Yao were out of the paints for pushing Duncan miss the hook, no one can get the rebound, KT made the tip like no Rox player was there. Like I just said last game, we gave up too many OFF rebounds to the opponets recently, this should be improved when the playoff is coming.
Scola is a very good rebounder (I'm not sure I can call him "great" yet) because he is extremely active and seems to have a knack on where the ball goes. And as a lot of people have pointed out, playing with Yao does benefit his rebounding. Yao is one of the best at boxing out. That gives Scola (or any other teammates) more space at the interior on defensive rebounding. That said, Scola still has to beat his own man to the board, which he does very well.
I would have thought playing with Yao was BAD for his rebounding?? Since Yao is number 6 in the league in rebounds per game? Surely that means he's taking away rebounds that otherwise Scola might be able to get? Anyway, I think the Rockets are the only team with 2 of the top 15 rebounders on the season. I don't understand the 'Yao makes it easier' argument - if that was true, we'd expect to see every Houston PF who played alongside Yao having career rebounding numbers every season. But J-Ho's numbers dropped when Yao came along right?
So Yao is a good rebounder for a 7'6 guy. that just sounds funny, but I kinda agree. He would be an awesome rebounder if he get some Yoga lessons in so he could stretch his body for some extra footage. He is a great area rebound within the parameters that his body and hand can reach.
yeah, I thought the same thing without looking up stats. yao may not be as good as people think he should be, but he isn't bad and therefore not the reason scola is having a very good year
An average above 6'10 guy going against Yao for a 50-50 board, who do you put your money on? I love Yao to death, but he is not a good rebounder.
