I'm with all that. I just hate to see any team not give all they have in a big game like that. Also, I think it would have been good for Scola in the long run to have logged more minutes vs. NBA all-stars before coming to play here (though I loved his poise in the limited minutes he got - dude seems fearless). Basically, I just wanted to see more Scola. From that perspective, the first half was a rip-off due to ticky tack fouls and the second half was a rip-off due to some goal related to something called "The Olympics." I remember seeing some kind of ice skaters and javelin pitchers on some kind of "Olympics" TV thing, but they play basketball on that show too? Why?
Why don't you go and check how that ranking is made. Spain is the best team in the World, yes. Without Gasol? why?
yeah, but argentina is the defending olympic gold medalist, so i will give them their due respect until we get the gold back.
Some already saying Howard is in mode of David Robinson and even young Shaq. Amare as well. I haven't seen why they are so great....or how much better they are than Yao? I can't see it.
Uh, that ranking weights the senior team events with about ten times as many points as the U19 events - to which the US generally sends B teams anyway since the top 19 year olds are in the NBA, and doesn't even always win - in fact they only finished second to serbia this year. Take that result out and the US still finishes number 1, if my math is correct, and will only add to their lead next month. USA 1, according to FIBA.
the amazing thing is we got Scola for nothing....we can only hope Bonzi gets his act together and Francis stays healthy...if so we are going to be up there with the Spurs/Suns/Mavs....we weren't even close last year....
spain is a different story. it was a fluke that they won the world championship. greece was so high after beating usa that they had a letdown against a pau less spain team.
OK OK... enough about who is the best team in the world or such. The team that wins the Olympics or the World Championship IS the best team in the world OK. No questions about it. You want the title, you go and take it from them. This thread should be about Scola. And for those questiong 'who Scola would do against the US team / against NBA players'... I think you just got your question answered. Of course, we all also know that he is not going to be 'Vasilis Spanoullis' back in Argentina too, LOL!!!
I did watch the game. And I didn't figure they had any real chance to win. I just wish they would have thrown everything they had into trying and was especially disappointed they didn't since their team didn't seem to have any give up in them. They played their asses off without their best player half the game -- one quarter cause of questionable calls and one quarter by choice. It's a taste thing maybe, but I'm for doing everything you can to win even if winning seems totally out of reach. And even, too, if you're trying to win a spot on some olympics-related reality TV show.
Did the Spurs got the best NBA players NO Did the Spurs have the best NBA team YES Did USA Have the best players in the world YES Did they got the best team NO (until they win something)
This is not a must have game for either team, both teams have qualified for the semis before this game. It's more important for the Argentine team to qualify than to have a closer game with U.S. and yes, they play basketball in the Olympics, and baseball too. I believe American football is one of the few sports that are not featured in the Olympics.
Don't know how Scola will totally will turnout or if the USA will dominate next summer, too? But can't wait NBA Finals 2008......
Hmm, yeah. That was a very good explanation. Let's see this team US has been work over by average inside guys, specially th eguy from Uruguay. The refs have been blowing everything on US favor anyways, and i have no clue why. The last two games the best player form the other team was in foul trouble with questionable fouls. The US biggest advantage is at the guard positions where they create turnovers, don't expect the same from Ginobli and Pepe snachez with Delfino as energy man to turn the ball over as much. Dont expect the weak guard paly from Papalokus, Dimatidis, And VSpan (he seems more under control with Papalokus at his side) And then Spanish Guards (Jose Calderon, Sergio Rodriguez, Rudy Fernandez, Juan Carlos Navarro)
No, really. I have seen them play many times... they are a great team. A team with a lot of depth, and that have won like 27 games in a row... It wasn't a fluke, they proved to be better than Greece and Argentina. They beated us in several occations before the WC, and then again in the WC.
Compare this team to the USA team at the 2006 FIBA Championships, or even better, compare this team to the 2004 Olympic squad. Give me a break. Hinrich? Johnson? B. Miller? Battier? The current USA Team is the best team in the World.
Great game...Scola looked better than I hoped, just didn't play as much as I'd like. I'm really looking forward to the start of the season like the rest of you. And WOOT! Finally a post on the front page! Woohoo
Is this the smallest margin the USA team won by? I'm not quite sure, but I know that most of their games were blowout by something in the 30s.
