For a Rookie you are right and on the mark as you see things so clerarly and exactly as ther really are. Y
Good post. I never saw Chuck Hayes spotting up to take jump shots under JVG, or Luther Head having to handle the ball so much (which is why Alston played so much, good or bad).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT2bH--_iUc Click this link. It just one example, just one. If you watched Rockets’ games this season, you should know Scola can play D. You can say his D is not as good as Duncan. But he’s certainly not too bad.
You have got to be kidding me!! James has made ZERO attempts to involve Scola in any offense of any kind. Fast breaks, layups, PnR, wide open underneath the basket...you name it. Nada. In fact, from the last 5 to 6 games, James doesn't pass the ball to anyone except TMAC.
No, but we saw plenty of that from KELVIN CATO. That's right, JVG forced Kelvin Cato to shoot jumpers. He freely admitted it. I think KC's FG pct. went down like 10 points under JVG. Is that Cato's strength?
Just curious, how do you know what Scola's strengths are? How many games have you even seen him play? Unless there's a mismatch, why would you ever give Scola the ball in the post over Yao? Especially when you have many other proven offensive options on the floor?
His one-on-one defense is actually not bad.. He most often than not stays infront of his man, is aggressive, always challenges the play, and follows the ball..which is why he gets so many defensive boards.. when he's not switching to cover for other Rockets players (usually a perimeter player) getting beat by his own man.. leaving him to defend a perimeter player.. The silly fouls you mentioned will go away once he gets acclimated to the NBA rules. As for everything else.. The man is getting 7pts 5 boards a game per 20min, making over 53% of his shots.. Comming from a combination of fighting crowds in the paint after defensive boards, hustle, strong drives when he's driven it in 10ft in, as well as midrange jump shots.. all within the flow of the offense. This guy can be physical, make strong plays, and not to mention.. he has some moves. It's not over-hyping to ask that this guy get some low-post plays called for him.. With the minutes he's getting, just with a few plays called for him, he could be a nice 12ppg 5-6rpg player for us off the bench.. Not to mention the low-post punch we need when Yao's out, and Bonzi's opting for threes..

How about giving Scola the ball in the post... say... when Yao's out? What's wrong with mixing it up? Adelman has no problem doing it with Yao..
Yes that's what we need to do. Some low post and some outside jumpers. He runs the floor on the break fairly well. I think he should also pass the ball into the low post to Yao when both of them are on the court along with his outside shooting.
Scola is usually left to get his touches from offensive rebounds or if by sheer accident one of his teammates gets blocked or something and he gets his hands on the ball. Otherwise he is out of luck. They are ok with giving him the ball way out on the 3 point line since they know he will then pass it but let him move anywhere near basket to get in scoring position and forget it. I remember that time a few games ago when they kept feeding Mutombo time and time again(and he would procede to fumble it). I was like... they will pass it to Mutombo but not Scola?? Does he smell? Is he into practical jokes? What has he done??? Its like they have a good old boys club going and rookies need not apply.
I'm completely with you on this one. It MUST be the "rookie treatment", which is lame because obviously it's costing the team more wins. Is a time-honored tradition more important than winning??? I always hear players say "rookies are not supposed to do this or that" but come on, we're not really a upper-tier team. Scola can obviously contribute, so why give him more touches. If we play him like this, he's just turning into another Chuck Hayes. Hustles on defense, grabs rebounds, and take a lot of put-backs. Wake up here, Scola is more talented than Hayes can ever dream to be. Let's not waste a valuable pick up here.
Zactly. This is what I envisioned when we signed him. When they start collapsing on Yao, bring him up top and bring Scola in down in the low block.
You're absolutely right. But remember, we didn't have a powerforward that year. We had injuries early on (Taylor was hurt, Griffin shot his girlfriend, Weatherspoon came in as a chode when we made the Moochie trade, etc), so JVG was forced to play Cato out of position. Cato is a center. Imagine playing Mutombo at powerforward. He'd be forced to shoot jumpers too. Yao was manning the paint, and Cato can't run or cut to the basket, that's just not his game, and not many centers can do that, so he had to take outside jumpers. Cato was really good though. JVG maximized his defensive and rebounding potential, as well as his dunks. It's not JVG's fault Cato had 0 offensive game. hayes can at least use his quickness to cut to the basket.
It seems the coach wants Bonzi and Yao to be on the floor at the same time! This year is Bonzi's contract year, and coach wants to give him more chance!
You may be right but Bonzi is: A) lazy defender (worse than Scola i think) B) Is shooting very very bad C) Undersized to be a PF. I just hope Scola can AT LEAST average the same shoot attempts per 48 as Bonzi. If Scola averages 9 FGA per game i assure he will be shooting over 50% and scoring an average of 10ppg. (not to mention that this will space the floor for both TMac and Yao)
