Well I have a little different opinion. He probably won't shine but I think he won't be so bad. I saw him in the SL and he looked well. I know that's only sl, but
When you said Scola is backing up Yao...it's not like he's coming off the bench but more like when Yao gets early break Scola will be playing center while Chuck is the PF. It looks good in this combination so far.
Yes! Scola Dola has been a great surprise and can play center, especially when the team doesn't have a true center. This being so, then it means that Butler could be eliminated or traded, inorder to reduce our numbers. Mutombo would of course play a few mins when we were against a real center like Shaq etc.
Yes, no question Scola could play at 5 for not more than 20 min. But with Yao, Scola, Hayes playing major minutes in the frontcourt and Deke being 50 years old, we need another big as an insurance in case any of them, *touch wood*, go down. Right now the only choice is Butler, or maybe Harris but only at the 4. Hopefully we can trade for a decent big during mid-season.
Yes, it's so rediculous when people say Scola won't be able to match up to the physical NBA post play because you can count the guys with a post game on one hand. Dirk, Amare, even KG are mostly face the basket and take a jump shot type of players. Who has a post game now days: Yao, Duncan, Shaq (getting old), Brand, Gasol, and that's pretty much it. As far as playing the five most teams don't even have a true center so Scola would be fine doing that too.
he will foul out in no time at center position. He does not have the speed against the leagues players who are constantly attacking the rim!
would not be surprising to see that when scola is playing center, it is hayes that is defending the opposition center.
There wouldn't be any issues in the offensive end, but the Rockets would suffer a lot with Scola's help defense. Plus, he is not a strong rebounder. I can see him playing some minutes against certain match ups, but he really can't play C.
yeah if someone can explain this to me that would be great...i just dont see mutombo helping this team at all...his skillset are perfect for gundy ball but will serve useless in RA system...Mutumbo is just taking up a roster space that could go to a younger and more promising player like harris or novak
In one word, insurance. Mutombo has showed in the past that he can fill in for a missing Yao for a while. With the addition of Butler, we won't be so dependant on the ageless wonder to play a huge chunk of the game and be an offensive lilability. If Scola were REALLY to be considered to play some 5, he would have to show his team that defensively it's worth it. Adelman may not be a defensive guru, but I'm sure he's not gonna just play Scola at center just because due's 6'9".
Agreed. Mutombo won't play very much if Yao is healthy. But Yao's health is a concern. Whoever is starting at the 4 (most likely Scola), Hayes will play a lot of minutes. It makes sense to let Scola's minutes spill out to the 5. I was hoping Butler can be our future backup center. But so far, he has shown nothing.
Based on what little I've seen, Scola could absolutely play the 5 against most 2nd centers. Some of you are talking about the state of centers, but the whole premise is that he would be there against the 2nd string, which on most teams (Miami with Zo being the one exception) are dregs. I see no problem with it and the added versatility of going with either Scola or Deke depending on matchups will make the team better and preserve Deke for the late season. I also think it'd be cool to have the Rockets press in the 2nd quarter when the subs come in for the other team... particularly those with weak or inexperienced backup PGs.
Public relations move? He's building a hospital and and Les does not want to come out looking like a "Scrooge". Regardless I'm glad to have him on board, his quotes are just hilarious at times.
I just continue to be amazed at the number of posters who miss something that to me is as obvious as the computer in front of me. Van Gundy's singularness of purpose was to control the defensive paint at ALL costs. The obsessive focus made for (among other things) poor rotations to the weakside and allowed for playing time for players with marginal offensive skills. All indications (and I'm counting SAC and POR here as well) are that Adelman is looking everywhere within his rotation + for any matchup that favors him on either side of the ball. It's a very similar view to Don Nelson without a lot of the quirkiness. Adelman isn't likely to be using Scola for major minutes vs Shaq but there are clearly favorable matchups when the opponent has to go to Zo or Haslem or Doleac when Shaq takes a breather. Scola will be fine at C when the matchup favorability is breakeven or better. To repeat...Adelman is ALL about matchups.
