damnit, I got sidetracked reading articles I found while looking for the mythbusters pic to post, and I missed the chance article from NYT http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/09/d...2e405bc24&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-second_rule if it hits the floor, its gonna get bacteria...its just a matter of how much personally, if I cant rinse the item off, then trash it
I follow a similar rule with my $100 bills. If it hits the ground I leave it for the peasants. Cause I'm rich, biatch.
Having eaten in the Harris dining room at Connecticut College many years ago, I can verify that some fairly disgusting but not necessarily bacterial substances end up on the floor. I would not eat anything dropped there. And Abbey House? Never...

And if any of you drink soda from the can....how do feel about licking the soles of the shoes of the delivery / stock / etc person who stepped on the flat before carefully placing the cans on the shelf.
I ALWAYS rinse and/or wipe off soda cans before drinking. Since I started doing that, I'm disgusted by the filth I clean off the can about 50% of the time.
What has always been really funny to me is when someone wipes off a beer can before they drink out of it. Its like...ok dude you are drinking alcohol thats hurting your liver and killing your braincells but far be it for you to drink a little dirt. Gimme a break, then they light up a cigarette. Stupidity is amazing sometimes. My dad did this for so many years.
Lame. Most nutritionists will tell you that, as long as the area isn't wet, your food will be fine for quite sometime, unless you are dropping it on a rather dirty surface. The key is dryness. Bacteria rarely forms on that. By your admission, I assume you are a hypochondriac? And I need my laptop fixed, damnit!
I'm sure people have eaten finger foods while typing on their keyboard. A little bacteria keeps the immune system strong. How do you think the Native Americans were wiped out...
