Just take all religion out of schools - let parents teach religion if they want to.....and that way Religion will die the death it so deserves.

Based on this, World Religions appears to be part of the World Geography curriculum:

When the world geography class at Riverheads High School in Staunton rolled around to the subject of major world religions...

I see, that makes more sense.

Why are they so fearful? Those that fear this simple lesson can convert their kids have zero confidence in their own faith. Speak more about them than anything.

Religion is everywhere and not going anywhere. World religion and culture classes to educate kids to be aware of different cultures and religions are very important in today connected world.

as an anti-religious person this pisses me off. this is forced/suberverive consecration in a non-religious setting. why can't these religious ****tards comply with a simple request such as keep your shiet out of my face and you can do whatever you want. religion has no place in schools.

i agree it's not going anywhere, it's part of world history. that being said you can historically teach world religions, no problem. i would love a chance to design the curriculum. would definitely have a semester (or two) dedicated to the atrocities in the name of god. perhaps that would teach more children to be critical of religions and maybe even abandon it and look for alternative spiritual fulfillment.

I have no problem with the assignment of copying calligraphy, although I think it's pointless busy work. My problem is the statement they were copying. Even though probably nobody that did the assignment could translate it, making students write a religious statement should stay out of the school. Making it an Islamic statement probably generates a lot more xenophobia and anger out of the parents.

Closing the whole school district down does seem like quite a bit of an overreaction. Was the safety of the students ever really in danger?

It was busy work... Having students copy or trace something is busy work....

I've had to trace Japanese and Chinese symbols in world geography and this was in 2002.
