Watson is more likely to play and then claim soft tissue injuries for 5 years in a row in order to screw the team. That's not good. Clearly, Texans ownership have screwed the pooch in many different ways, none positive.
It would be, but the Texans screwed up by giving him an NBA like type of contract, with so many guarantees and no trade clauses. He has his nuclear option if needed, and the Texans are the type of ownership where it just might be needed. Who cares if they hate you after? You go to a NY team or another market favored by the media and suddenly, just like Harden, no one really cares how you forced your way out. You think anyone would say anything about the poor Texans if they Patriots traded for DeShaun? Not at all, it would just be more fellatio by the media for Bellichick and New England. Instead it would all be coverage about his great new team and how the Texans are a crappy organization, which they are.
to each his own. CFans for me had always been a respite from the static of society. Somewhere along the line it has become just another outlet for propaganda and vitriol. Im not judging you in any way - I do not hold the same fundamental views as you in regards to politics but that doesnt mean I hate you and would rather be a Russian than a Republican. I hold on to the notion that we as Americans can remember how to care for one another again and stop the finger pointing and blame game and start more dialogue in how we can help each in curing what ails us. I dont agree with your views on the 'stars' who want to leave Houston teams either, but that doesnt mean I want to make fun of you for feeling that way. Be well.
just feels like it was OK for Favre to play his games to everyone involved in this situation, but now that Watson wants to dictate his future AWAY from a pathetic and ridiculously mismanaged franchise he is a diva. Texans made their choice. They chose Jack Easterby over Deshaun Watson and its time to move on. They need to own it and trade the guy. I wont work for incompetence either. Man makes the money, money doesnt make the man. Deshaun is prepared to sit out and I dont blame him. The double standard that its ok for teams to cut guys early, but not OK for players to do it is nonsense.
Without going back to the beginning its hard to tell how these mini relationships were fractured. There are some pretty strong feelings on both sides and I can only assume there was plenty of hurtful statements from both camps, but im not going to go through post histories. I dont dwell on bad vibes and negativity - maybe some people do? Then you are either satisfying a troll or you may be the troll yourself? Those are independent realizations that everyone needs to make. You can please some people some of the time, but you cant please all the people all of the time. Not every discussion needs to be a fight to the death for me. edit: I didnt think I was chastising you at all, if thats the way you interpreted it I apologize.
I agree with most of this. To me there are some distinctions-specifically between Favre and Watson. Favre didn’t pull those things in his prime, only when Packers were drafting his replacement. I could understand Watson doing the same thing in the same scenario. Yes, the NFL has more power over the players in terms of contracts. Imo, they should when the average career is less than 3 years and they have a hard salary cap. The Texans management is dumb, they have always been dumb. Watson still chose to sign knowing that. If he did that knowing he wanted a trade, shame on him. That’s poor character. If his mind changed during that period, rightfully so or not, handle it in house like a man. He’s losing a lot of respect from his fans because of his actions. It’s hard to take away anymore respect from the Texans. But they aren’t going anywhere either. I personally am never going to be a pro player empowerment. That’s against fair play and parity imo, players will team up and play in the markets that give them the most opportunities. We see that in NBA already and the league is a joke. MLB is to a certain extent except for the ability to keep young players forever.
To me there are very distinct parallels. Favre wanted a trade when his team wouldnt acquiesce to his input. Same here with #4 - at least Favre enjoyed some success with his team. Watson is not going to enjoy any years of team success with this outfit so why bother? His legacy is on the line and there is no dollar amount on it. What is there to handle in house? That was attempted wasnt it? Watson being told he would be part of this faux committee only to have his input and feelings swept under the rug and in turn the sentiment of the locker room as well. I dont remember accusations of spying on players back in September do you? I dont remember accusations of Jack Easterby meddling in player affairs to the point he is contacting players parents - what is this junior high? You guys want Watson to act like a professional, but when are the managers for this team going to do just that? You want players to stick around? Make sure you surround them with the tools needed for their success - its really pretty simple. You want to impose your own version of values and beliefs on grown ass men being paid to play a sport? Good luck with that.
If Watson won a super bowl, had been with the team for 10+ yrs and saw his replacement drafted. Yes, he should have some say in what happens. Watson should never have been promised something they didn’t plan in honoring. Again, I’m not saying the Texans are right. They have more culpability than Watson. Handling in house instead of vague, moody social media posts is what a professional would do. I’ve said this before, just because someone does you wrong or is unprofessional, doesn’t mean it takes away from my standards and way of behaving. I agree that if the Texans are trying to create an overly religious locker room, Watson has a right to try to get away from that or change it. There’s still not definitive proof that’s the case, and if there is I would expect the NFL to act upon it. The players and league collectively bargained for the entire players association about when players would be able to move teams (free agency). We’ve seen how it goes without free agency. It is a privilege and honor to play this game and be compensated the way they are. Not a right. Free movement between cities and franchises is not in the rules, rightfully so. A couple players shouldn’t be above the rest. They are entitled enough.
What moody social media posts? He post rap lyrics and some guys start to go cryptic and make assumptions. His own agent has come out and told people to pump the brakes and that most of what they are being fed is not true. Doesnt mean Watson wants to stay either, but maybe JUST MAYBE the public is sensationalizing and Watson IS being professional and trying to handle it as quietly as possible. I respect your feelings on player empowerment even if I feel they may be antiquated. Its the way things are sadly. Not a new advent. Again, the team had every opportunity to commit to Watson instead they committed to a charlatan preacher. How would that make you feel? Watson is going to be in the HOF some day - and the Texans are just in his way. Sucks to say it. Im a TEXAN fan, but I cant with a straight face say its OK for the team to do this to the player and expect the player to have more integrity than the team and just soldier through it. Seems like irreconcilable differences to me. Team will make out like bandits - it will be a historic trade. Cal and Jack will get their new messiah QB and Watson can go cement his legacy as one of the best to ever do it for a team who will do whatever it takes to help him reach those heights even if today we view them as worse situations. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder apparently. edit: for clarification - 10 year vets are afforded the input, but 5 year vets are not. Correct?
He allowed those assumptions to run rampant to the point where every media outlet and team in the country is thinking he can leave, so yeah that’s a huge red flag. My thoughts may be antiquated on player empowerment, I’m fine with that. They would have nothing if not for the leagues and teams that employ them. Athletics is not a necessity in the grand scheme of things, humble yourself as an athlete (from a collegiate athlete and someone who works in high level of Olympic sports). Need to pump the breaks on hall of fame talk. He’s not Mahomes.....yet. There are so many variables that would have to go perfect for Watson to just come close to HOF. Yeah, if he has 10 more years of the season he just had, for sure. But at that point, with the way QBs are putting up numbers. That might not even be enough.
And for the last part, that totally depends on where he goes. The grass isn’t always greener. And if it’s the Jets, good luck lol
Very true and in the same logical vein to the "players get paid good money to do what they do and they arent necessary" well .. you COULD be doing other things with your time too? Its Rome and the Coliseum. Its a human program to want to compete, to want to feel like you are a part of something and ultimately to win. Again you are entitled to your opinion on Watsons future as am I. I've seen enough to make my claim, and you have not. That's ok. I don't think he needs much to go "perfect" as evidenced by this last season and far from the luxurious setting of Mahomes and true football minds will remember that.
Agreed! What if he made the Jets into contenders? I mean as fun as it is to poke at them they HAVE been to an AFC Championship game within the last 10 years and I can remember a game I went to at NRG where Matt Sanchez kicked the sht out of us. Its all relative. If you have that special QB everything tends to fall into place if you have the managers committed to giving him everything he needs instead of taking it away.
Competition is an innate factor in most humans, yes. But you don’t know Watson is wanting to leave for competitive reasons, and if some of these teams are accurate, I’d say competition is absolutely not a priority. Watson putting up numbers on a bad team is not going to get him in the HOF. Even if he has a Phillip Rivers career, by that point the hall would be saturated with high number QBs. Mahomes is cemented already, super bowl and mvp. And best start to a career all time. Watson has the numbers but not the accolades. There is not guarantee he goes somewhere and wins, there’s no guarantee he stays healthy and even finishes his career.
Hopefully Mahomes stays healthy and has an all star team around him. I'd love to see him command a team that sucks! LOL just to bring the comparisons to an even state. Super Bowl wins are not a prerequisite to the HOF.
