Or you can rely on non-elite QBs to throw for tons of yards and TDs because the passing game is easier. Heck, Schaub has thrown for over 4,000 yards 3 times.
1.A lot of yards + sub 30tds = redzone issues 2. In those 'elite' seasons, Schaub has averaged 25tds and 13ints. In other words, a QB who is younger than 30 and who is not associated with 'normal, robotic, efficient self'.
Sure - if you're great everywhere else. The Texans of last year could probably win with Schaub. The Texans of this year, not so much. The problem is that it's arguably harder to be consistently good everywhere else than have a great QB. Having the latter stabilizes the whole team for a long period, whereas defenses and running games require so many moving parts that it's hard to maintain over a long time. For example, see the issue that having 3 pro-bowl linemen and a pro-bowl RB was apparently not good enough to have a reliably great running game this year. If you have an elite QB, you can win even on a day when your running game sucks or your defense sucks. If you have Matt Schaub, that's not very likely.
And two of those years, they didn't make the playoffs. So if that's what you're relying on, you've probably got a problem.
People are, not surprisngly, overblowing the RZ issues. They improved once Foster established himself as the everydown back. They finished 13th in RZ TD % in 2009 (pre-AF) but were 5th in 2010 and 6th this year through 12 games*. Their final 4-game stretch was obviously nightmarish and terrible and derailed their final ranking (14th). (In 2011, with Schaub, they actually ranked 18th - but keep in mind, they were scoring on *a lot* of big plays that year.) Let's be careful - you brought up the word elite; no one else did. He threw 29 and 24 TDs in '09 and '10. His 16-game pace in '11 was 24. He was on pace for 28 this year through 12 games*. When you factor in Foster scoring more TDs than any other skill player in football between 2010 and 2012 (47 total), I don't think you can denegrate his totals. (* I'm not, btw, trying to excuse his final 4 games; just demonstrating how truly terrible they were. They derailed a season better than I think a lot of people realize.)
what is the argumennt here. Kapernick had the greatest rushing performance in the history of qbing in the playoffs. Dude was a pitcher and throws harder than schaub can dream of. Flacco throws it seventy yards and doesnt get flustered. Schaub had few great regular seasons.
With #'s like those , it's mind boggling how anyone (ahem) ,at any point in time, could call him elite . 10-01-2012, 09:08 AM - This day will forever live in infamy.
The single least surprising development of 2013: ubigred equates elite status with TDs. You're welcome to find a QB+RB tandem that put up more TDs between '09-'12 than Schaub+Foster (134, with Schaub missing six games and Foster not making 21 starts, btw). (FYI - your (latest) bestest, favorist QB of ever threw 88 between '09-'12. Schaub? 90. In six fewer games.)
the more things change, the more things stay the same. we were b****ing about QB after the 2-14 season, and we're b****ing about QB after 12-4 and winning a playoff game two years in a row.
It's cliche but true...it's the favorite past-time of all fans who don't have the best of the best, e.g. brady, manning, brees, etc.
I'm not relying that. You need elite players somewhere, but it doesn't have to be QB. And I don't think it's necessarily easier to get an elite QB than it is to have some elite players spread out over the rest of the team. The Super Bowl teams this year each have an elite RB and an elite Linebacker. CLEARLY, if Cushing was healthy, the Texans would be in the Super Bowl.
It's the NFL. People will b**** about their QB no matter what. Heck, there are people out there saying Peyton is great at the regular season but sucks in the playoffs.
SB teams don't settle for good. Look at SF. They had a winning record and made a controversial QB change. They took a lot of heat for that, but their gutsy decision has helped get them to the SB. At this point, Schaub is neither a hindrance or a benefit, but the Texans overpaid him, so now the option to upgrade is off the table. We're stuck with him. No accountability!
Msn, people keep criticizing because people keep defending this guy as elite. He is only elite when everything falls in place. He will never make a play. Unless everything is honkydory he can only get you so far. Mr clutch quit wasting our time or research your posts. Manning has a losing playoff record and it took grossman on the other sideline to get a sb.
I would argue anti-Schaub trolls are keeping that idea alive. The vast majority of posters, even Schaub's loudest defenders, are in agreement that Schaub did not answer the call down the stretch this year, which has forced us to reconsider his long-term viability. There's certainly variance among our patience level and disagreement over a much better stretch of his play from earlier this year... but no one currently thinks he's elite.
