[Schaub Mention] Confessions of a Female Football Fan

Saw this this morning. I want a girl EXACTLY like this. Has a small, but funny, mention of a trash talking encounter with Matt Schaub haha.

The calendar year is divided into two halves for me: football season and the offseason. Try as I might to have other hobbies between the months of September and January, football is an all-consuming pastime. I may be a girly girl who loves shopping, talking, and watching chick flicks, but there are some confessions I have about my love of the NFL that only a true fan would understand.

I once missed a wedding for a playoff game.

I get annoyed when things are scheduled during football games. I know this is an unrealistic expectation, but I can't help it. The worst thing I have ever done is to miss a friend’s entire wedding. I would have been on time, but a crazy 2001 Colts wild-card playoff game went into overtime. The Colts then lost, adding further insult to injury. I rushed to the church and tried to sneak into the back before anyone noticed, but it was locked. Awful, right? I have since learned my lesson to set my DVR to record the big games, but everyone knows that is not as fun as watching the game live.

I hate pink jerseys.

I like pink and I like jerseys but I absolutely abhor pink jerseys. I mean, I really want to support the NFL selling women’s apparel but even I have to draw the line somewhere. Wear your team’s true colors. Save the pink bedazzling for the twelve-and-under crowd.

Sometimes my football priorities supersede my mommy priorities.

I once let my oldest son miss soccer practice AND stay up late all on the same night just because a particularly exciting game was on Monday Night Football. There. I said it. In my defense, we cuddled on the sofa and he did tell me I was the best mom in the whole world so of course it was totally worth it.

I am addicted to fantasy football.

I am physically and psychologically unable to decline any fantasy football league invitation. To my detriment, I find myself rooting for my players in one league only to find out I am playing against them in another. Being in multiple leagues means I must be pretty good, right? Wrong. I do not have enough time to dedicate to any one league to actually win. However, none of that logic stops me. I am currently in three fantasy football draft leagues plus I run a survivor pool on the side. In fact, I am drafting one of my teams right now in a separate window even as I write this article. True story.

I can be a bad sport.

In November of 1995, I scrounged up my hard-earned money as a college student to buy tickets to see my Indianapolis Colts playing the Miami Dolphins. The Colts were a lackluster team while the Dolphins had Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino. In that game, Marino broke Fran Tarkenton’s NFL record for career touchdown passes by throwing touchdown number 343 in Indianapolis. Marino received a standing ovation from the entire RCA Dome, minus me I was annoyed that we were celebrating an opposing team scoring, record-breaking or not. I am not proud of that moment, but I was supporting my team. Every now and then that famous touchdown highlight is shown on TV and my husband jokes that he can see a sulking college kid sitting with her arms crossed in the crowd.

I will find any opportunity to talk trash about your team.

Talking trash is a sport of its own that needs frequent practice. One summer I kept running into the Texans’ quarterback Matt Schaub at my gym in Houston. I left him alone (for the most part) but could not resist making a passing comment about his technique while he was lifting one day. “That’s probably not how Peyton does it,” I remarked, referring to his division rival Peyton Manning. He later did retort back with a good-natured but deprecatory remark about girls from Purdue not being able to catch (I had dropped a weighted ball and happened to be wearing a Boilermakers t-shirt.) It was pretty funny but I quickly recovered to offer up a response about quarterbacks from Virginia. After all, the cardinal rule of trash talking is to always have the last word.

Football is the ultimate pick-me-up.

After a stressful day, watching football cheers me up instantly. There is nothing better than curling up in front of the television to watch a great NFL game. It's like eating chocolate cake, wearing your coziest pajamas, and watching a Real Housewives marathon all wrapped up in one. Just hearing the NFL theme music gives me a warm feeling inside. “Are you ready for some football?” The answer to that question is always a resounding YES!

So forget everything you think you know about women who watch football. We are not just watching for the tight uniforms or to keep our men company nor are we burly, manly women. We are the new face of football fans.
