Agreed. Stop blaming Schaub for the TEAM'S failures. Was he a part of the problem? Absolutely. Was this loss HIS fault? Absolutely not. The ENTIRE team looked like a bag of ass today, and there wasn't a single thing (maybe the play of the LBs) to take away from this except that it's week 1, and we have time to turn it around. However, if Kubiak can't get these guys ready to play in time to turn this season around, I am all for showing him the door after this year is done.
Difference is Shaub hasn't proven anything yet...Warner 3 Super Bowl Appearances, Delhomme 1 superbowl appearance and playoffs numerous years, Cutler in 3 seasons has already proven much more than Shaub. This goes back to 2007 til today. In 23 total games as a Texan, Shaub has had 24 TD's (what most good starting QB's get in one average season), 20 interceptions and completed 461/702 passes for 65 %. Those are average #'s to say the least, except for his accuracy. You can be as accurate as you want, but all it takes is 1 interception on a long drive to throw that all away, and our redzone offense stinks, and always has even though we have talent on offense. As of now, he is definetily not worth his contract, at all. This isn't a knee-jerk reaction. We need to get a proven QB...we invested ALOT on a backup.
We had the number 3 offense in the NFL last season...look at the contracts of all the QBs that had offenses like our last year. He played very well last season and that really isnt debatable. So yes, it is a knee jerk reaction considering how powerful our offense was last year, led by Schaub.
15 TD's and 10 INT's isn't all that great. I agree that he is usually pretty accurate, but this is his 6th season in the NFL, and his 3rd as a starter...what has he really proven?? I know our offense was 3rd in the league last year, but that doesn't mean anything in football if your redzone offense stinks. Believe me, I'm not blaming him for everything. Football is a team sport, and no way 1 guy can be credited with a win or a loss, but Shaub hasn't proven himself. Maybe his contract is average now for a QB, I don't keep up with that, but if its an average contract, then sure he's worth an average contract. He is an average QB to me. Slightly better than a backup in my opinion. I don't have anything against the guy, but going on from what I've seen from him as a QB since 2007, he hasn't proven much as a leader or a guy who can throw TD's. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/stats?playerId=5615
Well, 15 tds and 10 ints may not stand out...but you cant fake a 93 QB rating. QB rating incorporates all vital statistics for a quarterback. If you are playing in 10+ games and you are able to achieve those numbers, then you are doing very good things on the field and its not by accident.
For the 2008 season, Matt Schaub was ranked 17th in the league for QBs, as far as how much they counted against the cap (5.75 M). http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/playersbyposition.aspx?pos=132 And for 2009, Schaub is counting just under 7M for us...which, if you assume everyone else's salaries stayed put, it would rank him 15th among QBs.
They also traded spots in the first round to get him. I thought at the time the Texans overpaid to get him, and I guess I'm right. Letting go Sage for peanuts was a mistake. Oh well. McCoy or Tebow anyone? LoL
Colt could slip to around 15 where we could grab him. This is assuming we go right around 8-8 again. I was worried about Colt's height but Sanchez is also 6'2". I don't think that would be a bad idea considering the success of Flacco and Sanchez (potentially of course..great start to his career and he just comes off as a natural leader ala Colt) I wouldn't compare to Colt to Matt Ryans who also had instant success bc he was the top pick. Tebow is an interesting player. If he slips to the second round which is doubtful, he would be a great player to bring in as a backup. I just like leaders! Being young, athletic, & energetic never hurts either.
I have been saying for 2 years that Shaub wasn't the Qb of the future. People on here will point to a QB rating and say that is the end all, be all, but it really means nothing. If you can't play every game, your numbers are worthless. If when you play in the games, you are hurt and unproductive, what do the ratings mean? I point to Kerry Collins on the Titans as what a solid Qb can do for you, and am immediately shot down because of their defense. Look at the difference between that team with Young and Collins. Collins shows up everyday and doesn't put the defense in a hole all the time. He helps the team all the way around and the record shows it. His QB rating was 10 points below Shaub. Look at Big Ben, or Eli and the results are the same. QB ratings lower than Shaub, but much better results. Those are the three best teams in the league. While their defenses are great, the Qb not making mistakes at inopportune times and being there everyday making the big play when needed means much moore than QB rating. That is the keys to the game. Do not put your defense in a hole, make plays when needed, and most importantly play in the game.
If you play in games and are unproductive...you wont have a good QB rating. Therefore, ratings mean a lot. And you keep mentioning that those 3 qbs dont make mistakes and dont put their team in a hole. How often has Schaub put his team in a hole over the last two seasons? Efficiency is his strength.
The book on "Ben Taub" Schaub is that if you get after him and hit him early in the game, then he'll play scared and tentative the rest of the game. I also thought it was pretty brilliant how the Jets had watched the film and discovered that Schaub had a tendacy to underthrow passes when he's backpedalling so they made it a point to get a push on him to force him into backpedalling. As for the O-line, well what did you expect? They are playing that quirky Denver Zone Blocking system which other teams especially the ones with big physical defensive lines, have figured out. After all, when your starting center is getting pimp slapped on every play, there's not much the QB can do. As for adjustments, about the only one they could have done was to go no huddle in the 2nd Qtr but I'm not even sure that would have worked. Kyle S was completely bamboozled by Ryan's defense yesterday and it showed. Now when we saw the same things happening to Pretty David, everyone pointed fingers and blamed him for the poor O-line play and all the sacks so I suppose it's now Schaub's turn. Ater all, it's far easier to find a scapegoat to blame rather than accept the reality that we saw yesterday.
I wouldn't exactly call that "rebuilding" the offensive line. They have been pushed around for eight years.
they have a pretty clean out after this year, iirc. the problem, though - what's your plan b? i think they had visions of orlovsky being a guy they could groom... and he may prove to be just that. but it's pretty obvious he's started out of the gates slow and fallen out of favor. so dumping schaub would leave a team that either will or should be on the brink of being a playoff contender without a starting QB.
They may be on the brink of sneaking into the playoffs, but they are not a real contender Ric. The offensive line is weak and easily overmatched. The defensive line has one good player. The secondary has one player who would start for a good team. This team still needs A LOT of work.
While yesterday was extremely disappointing, the o-line has certainly been completely redone. New coach, new scheme, new personnel all around. Only *one* guy, starting or reserve, remains from before Kubiak (if I remember correctly).
semantics, perhaps - but in my world, if you're on the brink of sneaking into the playoffs... you're a playoff contender.
There will be no "sneaking into the playoffs" in the AFC. The Pats were 11-5 last year and stayed home. The only way into the playoffs in the AFC is to kick ass.
this. he tucked and ran effectively one play after feeling the pressure around him. he wasn't limping at all.
I'm not saying Drop Schaub. I am saying you need a Plan B I am saying I think he is over paid. I just didn't think he is about 30 million + 2 2nd round draft picks + switching 1st round picks better than Rosenberg [Still don't] NOW Back to the O-line The texans make me think it is impossible to get a solid 5 man unit We might have to spend some 1st and 2nd round picks on some O-Linemen QUESTION: [off topic] What was the feeling on D'Brickashaw yesterday? I could not watch the game. . . is he still with the JetS? Rocket River
