nice to get the deal done. Don't know why people are thinking that the contract is way too much...it's what you have to pay for a quality starting QB. In the scheme of things, it's a reasonable deal. I don't get why people have a hard time understanding that simple concept. Like big men in basketball, QBs have a premium on them.

I assume the contract is structured in a way to help free up some space this offseason, which should help keep barwin.

Overall, good job by the front office locking up Brown and Schaub early.

As for the overall Schaub "debate" some posters try to have...most semi intelligent people understand that Schaub is not Rodgers or Brady, but he is certainly good enough to make plays when you need them and win a SB with the right pieces around him.

Yep. It's not even worth getting into the Schaub debate anymore.

He's not one of the 4 or 5 best quarterbacks in the league and sure I'd take some of the young top picks over him to start my franchise obviously, but he's a good player.

Would any other team have given him 15.5 mil?

And it just so happens that that's the VERY ESSENCE of our entire offense.

not sure if serious. Three-fifths of the league would have given him 15.5. Above average QBs are a premium.

and I bet 20-30% would have given him a non-negligible amount more than that per yr

The main risk you're taking is him getting hurt. Because if he wasn't signed and went down for the season again, it's a lot more doubtful that other teams would take a big multiyear risk on him coming off 2 straight season-enders. Then you might have seen other teams offer him 1-2 years guaranteed at a lesser amount, and we could have beaten that with less

I don't think that's a huge risk because I'm not on the "Schaub is super fragile" train.

Schaub has had a lot of injuries, but they haven't been recurring elbow injuries or throwing out his shoulder, etc. They've been someone blowing out a knee or a foot by hitting him illegally or landing on him in a freakish manner.

When Drew Brees left San Diego for New Orleans he signed a 6 year $60 million deal. This was after tearing his labrum!!!! At that point in time, Drew Brees had never been as good as Schaub has been thus far. His career high in passing yards was 3500, touchdowns was 27, completion percentage was 65%.

Matt Schaub has thrown over 4000 yards twice, including leading the NFL with 4700+, has thrown 29 touchdowns in a season and has been over 66% three times, including over 67% once.

Agreed on Schaub's non-recurring injuries and that being a good reason

However, Brees was 27 and still improving when he left SD. Schaub will be 32. Huge difference imo in terms of how other teams will value him, regardless of the fact that Schaub was a backup for a few years first

Moot point since we signed him of course. But his age is also a reason I brought up the injury risk of signing him now

Wow. Just wow. Don't even try to put Schaub in the same sentence with Brees EVER. Apples and Watermelons.

You missed my point. Brees is clearly a better player than Schaub at this point. My point was that 6 or 7 years ago when Brees wasn't as good and was coming off a torn labrum he got $60 million over 6 years. Today, with the cap about to explode, there is no reason to think Schaub wouldn't get the kind of deal he just got or better on the open market.

Although your posts towards me are incendiary, I can wholeheartedly agree with the above sentiments. Superb post.

You'll have to be more specific with what your "sigh" meant. Does it mean you too don't understand the point of a post? That you too lack the ability to read in context? Or does it mean that you think I am factually wrong that after the 2005 season Drew Brees had a torn labrum? That he signed for $60 million? That he was not at that time a "great" quarterback like his is now?

Please, enlighten me. What was your point of contention?

    Michael Vick – 5 years $80,000,000 - Signing Bonus $7,000,000 – Other Bonuses $8,000,000 – Average Salary $16,000,000 - $32.5 million guaranteed

    Philip Rivers – 7 years $98,250,000 - Signing Bonus $19,550,000 – Average Salary $14,035,714 - $38.5 million guaranteed

    Sam Bradford - 6 years $78,000,000 - Signing Bonus 18,000,000 - Average Salary $13,000,000 - $50 million guaranteed

    Mark Sanchez – 5 years $58,250,000 - Signing Bonus $8,000,000 - Other Bonuses $6,500,000 – Average Salary $11,650,000 – $20.5 million guaranteed

    Matt Cassel – 6 years $63,000,000 - Signing Bonus $0 – Average Salary $10,500,000 – $28 million guaranteed

I would say the Texans did pretty good with Schaub.

    Matt Schaub - 5 years $66,150,000 - Signing Bonus $17,500,000 - Other Bonuses $3,000,000 - Average Salary $13,230,000 - $29.15 million guaranteed
