In the book it is even scarier. A friend of mine always gets the creeps when he thinks about her deformed sister. Damn, gets me goosebumps too......
I guess people must have been more easily scared back in the 70's, because The Exorcist was pretty weak when I saw it in theaters a few years ago...
I second many of those already mentioned... A few more: Carrie When a Stranger Calls Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) The Omen
Though I don't know of many truly chilling movies, here are some very good movies that are.. kinda blood, guts, and eerie action movies more than scary movies... The Thing (1984 by John Carpenter) excellent movie - a must see! Aliens the best of the 4 alien movies (though Resurrection was pretty darn good) Predator still a classic There were some classic movies that were extremely scary in their day (Jaws, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby...) but they just don't seem to be very scary any more. Only the Shining and the Exorcist have really survived the test of time. -- droxford
Palmray, You may have known this or not, but Stephen King was never happy with Kubrick's version of "The Shining". He felt that he deviated too much from his story, so he wanted to do another version that stuck more to the book. It had that guy from "Wings" and Rebecca DeMornay and from what I heard was crap.
Signs The Ring Nightmare on Elm Street Event Horizon American Werewolf in London IT - that damn clown... Halloween I and II. The Thing - John Carpenter's Good call on the sister from Pet Semetary - her name was ZELDA. I can hear her calling out "Rachel!, Rachel!....."
The only scarier than The Ring is ANYTHING. I was pissed off when I watched that one after all the hype. I seriously wanted my money back. The only "scary" movie that sucked more than The Ring is The Blair Witch Project. The Aliens movies are freaking great! And of Course the Shining, Exorcist, Omen, Rosemary's Baby are classics. The original Chainsaw movies kick some butt too. Did anyone mention The Fly? I also liked The Sixth Sense. If you want to watch something creepy, then watch the 1932 classic Freaks
Carrie - Hand out of grave, enough said The Ring - Chick coming out of TV, I hollered like a bytch. The Sixth Sense - "Remember when you were at your dance recital and you thought your mother didn't come, she was there..." "My mother died befor you were born, how do you know?" "She told me"
this movie was probably more funny than anything else imo, ab. my college friends would come to my dorm room on the weekends and watch it at night when there was schit else to do. quotes like... "i should have killed myself when he put it in me." and... "take that dress off. I can see your dirty pillows." "they're called breasts, mama... and every woman has them." and... the whole scene where the mom was chopping carrots on the cutting board while carrie was at the prom was classic. anyway, i agree with some of the others. definitely 28 days and pet cemetery (sp?). gage was one freaky little kid and rachel's sister was one scary witch. "i'm gonna twist your spine just like mine!"
The original "The Haunting" in black and white is very good. No elaborate special effects, just good suspense.
If by suspense you mean intolerable boredom, then yes, I agree. It might have done the job five decades ago when a close-up shot of a turning doorknob was scary, but by today's standards it's a real yawner.
OK, on the basis of many mentions in this thread, we went out and rented "Event Horizon" today, and I must say, it was not all you guys made it out to be. I was not scared or creeped out in any way. Somewhat lame, actually.
Good call! forgot all about that one! Phantasm was a good one, and all its sequels were good, too. Though they lost their scary edge after the first one, they still make for good viewing. I saw Event Horizon - didn't like it. I had a hard time believing the whole 'space ship is alive' thing. Haven't seen "the Ring" yet. Ya notice how nobody has recommended the Blair Witch project? People were ranting and raving about it at the time it came out - I was the only person I knew who didn't like it. It was a whole lot of nothing. You can just forget about the Freddy/Jason/Michael movies. They're amusing, but I would never call them scary. And if you've seen one, you've seen 'em all. -- droxford
