I remember watching Candyman with my brother late at night when i was around 8 or 9 and I couldn't sleep for days, but I watched it again last year and thought it was pretty lame. The Ring is definitly a good one.
Same here! The ring is the scariest and most disturbing movie I have ever seen! It's far from the gorry/bloody type of horror movies you usually get in US. It's based more on what's not there! ALA (to tell you the truth I don't even know the end cause I could never go though the whole movie!)
Exorcist and Event Horizon have already been mentioned but Children of the Corn always freaked me out also.
Same here. I can never watch that scene in it's entirety. There is a hall in my house that has 3 doors in it, one on each side and one at the end, and I can not walk through it without picturing that women creeping up behind me or waiting behind one of the doors. I've tried leaving the doors open thinking that it would rid myself of the fear of her lurking behind one but no, it just created more places for her to hide. So now the doors stay closed and I have a night light. I'm surprised people are saying The Ring. I thought it was goofy when I watched it. Maybe I should watch it again. Just noticed someone mentioned Children of the Corn and yes that's good one too.
Then you should see 28 days later.....the tension in this movie was incredible. I had to get up and pace the room a bit while watching it........didn't even realize I was doing it at first.
Watching scary movies is like torture for me... I've got to be the jumpiest mofo alive! Slasher flicks aren't scary, as I'm sure we all know. I don't respect most "horror" movies because they generally just use the old "something ugly jumps out in a quick cut scene with loud, scary noise!" gimmick. That's like your brother jumping out from the bushes and screaming "Boo!" Too easy. The Ring had a few of these moments but its story was so corny and rediculous. Bad acting, too. 28 Days Later had a couple of these too, but the scene near the beginning in the church was really frightening. The Shining I really respect, because it didn't resort to the "Boo!" scares. The old lady/tub scene was by far the scariest part, I agree. I've heard that The Exorcist is more along these lines, too, but I've never seen it. Satan seems kind of corny to me.
Ichii The Killer was more like one of the goriest movies I have ever seen. Just afraid to open my eyes to watch the potential victims. Not mentioned yet: Audition, by the same director. 28 Days Later
I remember watching the old black and white night of the living dead when I was about 10 and being horribly scared. In my head it was the scariest movie ever --- then recently I rented it and couldn't believe how campy it was. Did you see Wrong Turn --- not that original but very fast moving and intense
The Japanese are currently ruling the horror scene. Some of the more popular and readily available titles are Ringu (became The Ring), Suicide Circle, Inchii The Killer (don't rent it at Blockbuster...they censor their movies), and Battle Royale. Their is also a very creepy Japanese movie based on the Sixth Sense, but I can't recall the title right now.
I'm hard to please when it comes to scary movies. Reaon being: I find that a lot of 'scary' movies aren't really scary - they just startle you. They build a quiet scene and then throw in a surge of music as something jumps out at the main character. It's not scary. It's just startling. I don't like these knids of movies, 'cause there's really not much too 'em. The movies that have been listed, like The Shining and The Exorcist are favorites because they don't resort to the above-mentioned cheap tactics. They build story, dialogue and characters that really firghten you, and chill you to the bone. those are the good ones. I wish I could make my own scary movie. I'd make a classic. A chilling movie, with a chilling plot and scary, scary development. I oughta write a script someday. I have a concept of the creation of a series of movies. The first would be called "TSK: the birth of a Transient Serial Killer" -- droxford
I have a great idea for a movie, too. It isn't a horror movie, though. It centers around the romantic escapades of a group of trendy urban couples. I call it "...Almost"
I didn't get the ending...Can you or someone explain it...It was scary, don't get me wrong, but for those of you who haven't seen it, don't read... Why doesn't the kid and the mom get "burned"...I understand how the dad did...Also, what's with the copying of the tapes...I thought they wanted to limit the number of people who saw it...
Copying the tape is the only way to save oneself from getting killed. The mom doesn't get killed because she made a copy early in the movie. At the end, she gets her son to make a copy so that he won't get killed either.
The kid and mom didn't die because the made copies of the tape, while the dad didn't. I think the girl wanted others to know what happened to her, thus you don't die if you copy the tape.
