Seeing Anthony Hopkins name reminded me of Silence of the Lambs and the original Alien was great as well.
To this day, if I watch "The Shining" in its entirety (and I mean Kubrick's version), I can not sleep well for about a week. Movies like Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. aren't really scary to me because they seem like they are just chase movies throughout. "The Shining", though, builds this unsettling atmosphere throughout the movie. The music that Kubrick picked for this film was perfect because it helped make that movie so unsettling.
Originally posted by Surf guy What about that one where a machine has become aware and takes over this house with all this security and video as eyes everywhere. The Ring was not scary, at all. Event Horizon was a good choice. Although I've never really been scared at a movie, I have been startled. But I think that a loud noise and jumping is a natural reaction, and a cheap scare. It doesn't play on the mind. Has anyone seen House of 1000 Corpses yet? It's not bad...
you guys should check out japanese horror movies. they've mastered how to build up a moment and freak the hell out of you. i saw one last year, its called dark waters, nothing too out of the ordinary for the plot (except for one or two), but damnit can they really pump up the scenes. and the background music, it'll make you piss your pants. really, go check it out. download it or something. i thought the signs scene where the kids at the party screaming at the alien was pretty scary too.
Usually remakes are totally lame, but... Did you guys see The Shining remake that was on (last?) summer? Now let me tell you: The Sixth Sense din't scare me, The Ring didn't scare me, the Exorcist didn't scare me, Magic, Children of the Corn, and the original Shining with Jack Nicholson didn't scare me. But this remake of The Shining scared the living **** out of me. It was in 2 parts, the first and the second, but I couldn't get through the second night. It had the perfect combo of jumpiness, grotesque effects, and perfect background music. Absolutely horrific. Me and my girlfriend almost cried we were so freaking scared.
I couldn't watch it because the acting was so bad. I feel bad for that guy from Wings because nobody can replace Jack. I might try and watch it again if you say it's that good.
I agree. The acting was awful. The kid wasn't very good. But seriously, I didn't watch half of the second night because I had to turn it off. When the lady in the room snatched the kid from the hallway...that was it for me.
Hmmmm I saw this at best buy the other day, the remake of the shining. How does it compare to Rose Red? Amityville Horror 1 and 2 were the best out of that series. I was just thinking as well about another movie that was scary....The Children. Remember the movie where the kids go through a radioactive cloud on their bus and they suddenly come out as zombies that burn you at the touch with these black finger nails. My picks.. Signs Amityville 1 and 2 Rose Red The Children Shining Candyman Hellraiser 1 and 2 The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. a reliable source in the movie biz that I know who does special effects for alot of Horror movies said Dustin Hoffman played the character of the old grandpa. He said he did not want his real name in the credit for fear of being stereo typed. Didn't Johnny Dep do the same thing in Nightmare on Elm Street? Wasn't he the guy that was in the bed that turned into a geyser of blood? In the credits his name does not appear...hmmmmmm
Yup, The Shining was pretty disturbing. Kubrick created a real aptmoshere (sp?) with that flick. The camera angles, the music, the imagery etc. Those 2 little girls standing in the hallway get me every time! Showgirls was pretty scary too, but for very different reasons...
up until a year ago i would've said The Shining. now my top 3 are: The Ring The Ring dvd The Ring dvd with extra **** that movie scared the everloving crap out of me and i can't really figure out why. most scary movies don't really scare me (especially if we're not just talking making you jump which isn't really the same) and even if they do, the scariness is gone by the end of the movie. not so with The Ring. that movie scared and disturbed the crap out of me (hell it still does and it's been like 5 months). it's just so damn creepy. i still can't look at tv's the same way. if i'm around a tv and it's off (which isn't often with how much i watch tv) i just keep thinking, it better not turn itself on and go to static. i will run through the nearest window and won't stop to ask questions until i'm about 2 miles away. everything about that movie just added to the scariness. stuff like signs, jaws, exorcist, even sixth sense for the most part, they didn't scare me. great movies, suspenseful, jumpy, yes. scary, not really. The Ring, scared the crap out of me. and lots of other people i know have said the same thing.
Well, I guess lately my favorite scary movie is The Ring. I watched it again last night and even though I knew when the "scary parts" were, I still got freaked out. I remember when I was younger, I was freaked out by Chucky in those movies. It wouldn't have been so bad, but I was babysat by my neighbors who had a Chucky doll. After watching a movie about the doll killing people and then seeing the doll right there, I had some bad dreams. Even later when they ripped of his head, I was afraid of him. Now several years later, I am embarassed to ever be afraid of Chucky. I'd just kick him or something and that would send him 20 feet.
Ok I have new one to to add The Ring I can't sleep now.... mommy I just have one thing to say: Where can I find the japanese versions and can someone tell me if the Dvd version is better? When is the sequel............... I will never look at a snowy picture on my tv the same way again.......
This movie bothered the hell out of me. It had me covering my eyes with my hands in the theater. Really disturbing stuff.
The Ring was crap. Darkness Falls is scarier than that, which should tell you something. Signs is a good choice, especially the cornfield scene and the basement. Scary movies are really too predictable to be scary.
