My mom has to go to Mexico to deal with a legal matter with our family over there and if you know the condition the country is in right now with the drug cartels, I'm pretty scared. I've heard many stories about kidnappings, busses being raided, stuff being stolen and all these things. I've heard it's gotten slightly more secure very recently but I don't know. Anyone been to Mexico recently? Last time I went was in 2011 (after going there once or twice a year pretty much every year for as long as I can remember).
I go to Mexico at least a couple of times a year. It's not bad, it's just a bunch of media propaganda. Just don't go out late at night...
I was in Mexico City last month. Depends on what part of the country she's visiting, how familiar she is with the area, and her general behavior. If she usually rides a bicycle at night in the Third Ward at night, then maybe it's unsafe for her. Otherwise, use common sense and it's very safe. I've visited very treacherous countries. Mexico isn't as nearly as bad as some Americans believe it to be, and the situation is so much better than 7-8 years ago.
Mexico is fine bro, she will be alright. My gfs parents always go to SLP in bus and they are always okay.
I wish I could confirm the positive experiences that others have posted here, but I can't. My uncle is Mexican (Garcia) and owns a house in Mexico. While traveling through Mexico City, his car was robbed at a stop light. A gang would wait til the light was red and all cars stopped. Then they went car-to-car with guns demanding wallets and watches. People in cars had nowhere to go and gave up their stuff. When the light turned green, they all drove off. When the light turned red again, the thieves had a new crop of victims. He was also pistol-whipped during an attempted carjacking. While my older brother (in his 40's with family) was traveling in Mexico City, cops pulled his rental car over for no reason and he had to pay a bribe to them. Be careful. Have two wallets - one that you'll give to robbers with only a couple of bucks and another hidden somewhere other than your pocket. For women, don't keep anything valuable or irreplaceable in your purse or pocket. Be ready to bribe police. Memorize emergency contact numbers in case anything goes wrong (including preparing for having to make a long-distance call). Turn on GPS on your phone and set it up so that others might be able to find you through it. Stay in frequent communication with others. Try to prepare for anything potentially bad.
Inlaws just came back...visited Monterrey family reunion....they drove said no issues....they do speak spanish....
Mexico? LOL, I'm going to El Salvador this month...... Hoping to have 0 encounters with MS13....... Do you even cartel brah?
Unless you and the OP have some sort of masochist thing going on, I haven't got a clue as to why you would make a statement like that. Apart from it being disrespectful, your comment states that the primary goal of the Mexican mobsters is to kidnap idiots... I haven't been to Mexico in at least 15yrs, but the last time I was over there my wife and I were surprised when a waiter in a local restaurant asked us in what part of the US do we live in. I wasn't expecting that because we always try to blend in as much as possible and not get any unwanted attention! We weren't dress fancy, we didn't have any jewelry on, or order anything to expensive from the menu! What gave us away? Our Spanish! I have always been bilingual and speak fluent Spanish, or at least I thought is was fluent Spanish, but in reality what I speak is more tex-mex! Even though I didn't use any English words, my Spanish still gave me away!.. In reality, when you go to another country, especially a country that is in turmoil, the best thing you can do is try to blend in, don't dress to impress, and stay away from the known bad parts! Unless they mistake you for an idiot ,if so, "Run Forrest, Run"!... ....... ....... .......
Going to Mexico is like eating grocery store sushi, it's just a roll of the dice. You might get moderately decent tasting sushi, you might get food poisoning. The exciting part is finding out which one you got.
My mom's been to Mexico once a while back... she said tacos there taste very different than what we're used to at Taco Bell and the sorts. They lacked taste.
