That pissed me off how he attacked the reader for their curiosity. You made the claims, genius! That's why the chronicle will always be a joke. Call me crazy, but I would not trade Lidge for Manny and especially not Abreu. I know 34 is prime years in baseball but I can't bring myself to trade a 27 year old best closer in the NL. I would only trade Lidge for Cabrera or Willis.
Have you looked at the sports section in the Morning News lately? It's filled with info. Great paper. Sadly, the Chron is just flat out vanilla.
Aaaaaaahh ... they ain't makin' no deal fer NUTTIN'! Others load up, & we will field the same team as last year. Not the worst thing in the world. Another WS? Who knows? But if I were a betting man, I'd say "naaah."
JLopez is a major joke and has been for a while, he's a freakin' idiot. As long as the Chronicle has him on their payroll, they'll never be taken seriously. Justice and Feigan are about it for me... As for the rumored trade, I would say no thanks to Manny for Lidge and another one of our up-and-coming players, but I would REALLY like to keep Taveras, and I would only give up some of the other guys if we can get Tejada in return or another elite starting pitcher.
I live in Omaha and our Sports section is an after thought when the Huskers are not playing, so I really miss the Chronicle I hate to show my age, but I used to like the Houston Post alot better
I tried to reply to that crap, but I bet he won't "approve" it. After you click "submit", there's a disclaimer that he has to approve any messages before they're posted.
Hey, me too! Really, though, what I liked was both newspapers having competition. Today, if you really must have a local paper rag, the Chronicle is it. Thanks, but I'll stick with bbc.co.uk and google search.
This is the problem, IMO. When there was competition, the papers had to be accountable for the crap they printed (or blogged, if they had blogs back then). Now that it's all Chronicle all the time, they can be as sloppy as they want because readers don't have any alternative. Man, I remember when Dale Robertson was with the Post. Didn't he have a p*rn 'stache all the way back then. Oh yeah, the topic. I'd do Lidge for ManRam and throw in Everett to fill their need at short. Yeah, Lidge is younger than Manny, but Manny is that special kind of player who could put us over the top. Top-notch closers are great to have, but you don't absolutely need one to win the WS. EDIT: Great minds, msn!
So, you guys think Lidge and his "best slider in baseball" are easily replaceable with some of our other pitchers? I think that overconfidence comes from how Lidge stepped up after Wagner left. Screw all your trade scenarios. I want Brad Lidge on my team.
The NY post literally makes up trade rumors half the time. But because they have so much influence and such a large audience, half the time people and even management ends up believing them.
OK, here’s something interesting. Go to Astros.com and click on the “Allyson Footer on Clemens” MLB.com radio interview. Footer talks about the budget for next year, the fact that we’re pretty much stuck with Bagwell, and that the office is high on some of the young pitchers like Nieve and Hirsh. It’s a good interview. But, what’s relevant to this thread are the following quotes: “I heard something the other day that could be a little bit bigger than something we would expect from the Astros." "I'm hearing that they might be interested in Kevin Mench. But I'm also hearing that Lidge could be in a blockbuster deal. I can't tell you the names on the other end because I don't know, but I think we know the big blockbuster names, the bats that are on the market. I don't think that's a secret. I'm just hoping it's not Ken Griffey, Jr. He’s a hamstring injury waiting to happen." I’m guessing that Lopez’s “scoop” was that he heard Footer’s interview. Personally, I put more stock in the rumor now that it came from her and not Lopez (or just that the two are hearing the same thing.)
What would be wrong with Lidge +asdf asdf for Miguel Tejada. The salaries don't match up, and prospects would be negoiated on. But the orioles need a closer since BJ Ryan left them, and the astros need a better hitting shortstop. Just my 2 is their not a damn cents key on my keyboard?
