Only people who have lived in China before 1980 can truely appreciate the progress of China curing the last quarter of century. It is like night and day.

I certainly agree with this. There is still inequality between the sexes in the States, equal pay for equal work and reproductive freedoms being two that come to mind... the first, unequal pay for equal work, still exists, although my wife has busted through pretty well, and the second is under attack. I firmly believe that, while we shouldn't attempt to impose our culture on others, that doesn't mean we can't be critical of some aspect of other cultures, just as I would expect those of other cultures to find fault with ours. It wouldn't be difficult for your typical American, before launching into a litany of reasons our culture is great, to have first launched into a litany of problems that we have with it, lol.

I also think there are some members of this BBS who post with a microscope, splitting hairs being of the utmost importance. ;)

I have no doubt about it. In some ways, the United States has regressed over the last 25 years, so go figure. :)

No, they aren't. Women are allowed to have or not have babies as they choose. Nobody is forcing women to get pregnant, nor disallowing them from getting pregnant. Only the ability to murder unborn children is under attack, as it should be. If anything, banning abortion would bring more equality to the sexes, because men now do not have the option to abort children, while women do have that option.

That is your opinion. I disagree. I don't want to get into a back and forth about the subject, however. If you want to start yet another thread about it, go ahead. :)

OK, that's fair enough. I'll stop using (although I don't think it was me in this thread) 'totalitarian' when speaking of the current PRC regime, and substitute 'authoritarian.'

Not saying I wouldn't want to visit China, just saying I would still find the 'authoritarian' regime something I hope China transitions out of.

HEY! I'm not even sure what you mean by this but I don't think its good! :p

Its called rape... and in that case women dont have a choice. If they get pregnant it probably wasn't their choice. Also, banning abortion would just recreate what happened before Roe v. Wade. People either go on cruise ships and get abortions done on the high seas or they just go underground and do it illegally in some shady "clinic." More than the moral reasoning which I think is a wash and probably is worthless to debate about, there are significant practical reasons as to why the right to abortion should remain in place.

in india you can get it done for a tenth of the price :p

anyways, ya compared to usa the labor is dirt cheap, esp if you get paid in dollars

but for a regular citizen there who isnt part of the royal family or who dont own an oil well, 100 riyals a month for getting car washes seems quite alot.

Rape is a crime and has nothing to do with reproductive rights. Try to follow along.

Um, and inflation in this case is bad how? More money in circulation = higher prices, so of course there's going to be inflation with a larger workforce and higher salaries. Inflation is not necessarily a bad thing.

    Correlation != causation

    Prove it.

    Prove it.

One day in an economics class will tell you that this contradicts your #1. Inflation and unemployment are inversely related.

There is a concept from a somewhat discredited source that I think belongs in the conversation here. In a much different context, Karl Marx discussed the concept of class consciousness.

I accept that women in Saudi Arabia and generally everybody in China has a clear self-awareness of social class. However, because the state maintains strict control of knowledge and information, these groups are unable to make informed rational decisions about self interest. Unless their respective states unequivocally free the flow of all information, including corruptive foreign ideas and remove all coersive social pressures, their opinions can not be understood as their own. Instead, the ruling elite is able to manipulate and push the masses into acting against their own self interests.

Until then, I consider afermations such as this one to be bunk. If you would like one extreme example, consider the case of this lady:

    Patty Hearst

Does anybody wish to argue that Patty Hearst would have enthusiastically joined the Symbionese Liberation Army of her own free will if she had been allowed to make a rational, informed choice?

The power and control which her kidnapers exercised over all aspects of her life caused her to willingly act in a way completely contrary to her own best interests. Her behavior both before captivity and after being freed bore no resemblance to how she acted during her captivity.

If one would like a larger scale example, think about how Kim Jong Il has managed to manipulate the North Korean population into worshiping him when he and his father have made the country the poorest and most restrictive in the world.

The list of illustrative examples in world history is nearly endless. This means nothing when taken in context.
