new contracts aren't economical, so there is no reason to keep them on the payroll if there is no work for them to do... if the game you were working on got cancelled and games weren't economical to make anymore i'm sure you would get laid off too if you worked for a publicly traded company like activision or EA.

Yeah, they pay workers with profits or because they have profits. They are laying off workers because otherwise they wouldn't be profitable. This conversation makes no sense

Impact should be felt on gas prices here pretty soon. I'm betting there's going to be pressure on the union to cave on some of their demands. Shell is repping the oil industry and they walked away from the bargaining table. And I know first hand that Lyondell has an extensive strike contingency plan in place. From what I've seen/heard, picket lines have been scarce in protestors, and I'd imagine that there aren't too many people happy about missing payckecks.

I'm not fully in the know, but I think the union is blundering here. I still think they will be voted out of one or more of those facilities pretty soon and I won't be surprised to see people crossing the picket lines and going back to work. I mean honestly, is there anyone here willing to stop working to get better than an 80/20 split on their health insurance? I know I'm not.

Layoffs at "my" company won't start until late March to early April. Pretty crappy to work with uncertainty.

Looks like this has little to do with the current price of oil and is tied directly to the life cycle of the oil wells there. They're simply drying up.

It does suck. Mental toll... but it's a positive thing, technically.

In similar situations in my past it's allowed me a time frame to find better work or at least find other options. It gets you circulating with people that are hiring again and it's nice to get comfortable interviewing again while you wait.

Even if things work out at the current employer you're empowered to do something else. If things don't work out and you still don't have a job, at least you have a leg up.

I've never actually lost a job before but I have walked out on companies that starting going in the wrong direction more than once before.

    Measles smeasles. :)

They blew away every projection in their earnings report yesterday...stock is up nearly 8% today, alone.

I bought in a few months back for $89...it's at about $102 as I write this.

Interesting. My first desk was covering our North Sea assets. I'm also getting that role back bc of this mess. LOL. More work, same pay.

I think it is along with a stupid vanity license plate. You also have to respond to the question "what do you do for a living" with, "I work in oil and gas" -- if you give an actual job title or profession they'll shun you forever.

Yes, as well as an extremely large pickup truck in case you have to transport the oil yourself.
