Maybe because hundreds of thousands of Cantonese have been in SF since the 1850s, predating most white people who live in Cali and most Eastern European/Jewish immigrating through Ellis Island. heh, that's what a lot of people notice who visit. what's really odd is how the civil servants are asian, like your mailman is some Chinese guy. it's like being in hawaii
Going to SF on Monday for work and will be there for a few weeks at a time for the next month or so...any recommendations?
I can't stand people who act tough and use violence to intimidate people. especially people who use their hands in your face trying to provoke you.. the asian lady sure showed that lady what's up!
Yea, mid-way through my second year! SF isn't a bad place. Only thing I still have trouble with is the weather. I love just wearing my basketball shorts and a t-shirt. But the weather here is whacked-out. It will be decent in the morning (around 10ish), then get hot by 1 or 2, and by night (around 5ish) the winds pick up like crazy.
She was speaking in an incredibly fast canton-ish chinese. <-- meaning she is speaking cantonese but not very good at it. So it was unclear. But in the end, i heard that she was saying something about the black lady taking her seat and not letting her sit? and than screaming at the chinese lady and saying that shes chinese and shes not helping chinese people. I guess she just doesn't understand that the chinese lady was just trying to stop both of them and not just helping the other lady lol
Have you ever had Afghan food? If not, then hit up Helmand's Palace. Its on Van Ness between Green and Union. Very good food and I am very picky about my food. Afghan food = meat intensive, but it has a great selection of vegetarian dishes also. http://www.helmandpalace.com/menu.html Recommendation: Starter = Mantwo or Bowlawni Entree = Chapendaz or Teeka Kabob; but you can't go wrong with any of the dishes. They are all very good. Enjoy!
Here's the Chinese lady commentary on this: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_lKcovAC3Js&hl=fr&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_lKcovAC3Js&hl=fr&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
In many fights, the smaller weaker person provokes the bigger, much stronger person into beating his ass. Last night, some tatted up wanna be gangster punks getting high/drunk started talking ****. I take my jacket off, crack my knuckles and stretch my arms a little. The one next to me stands there talking ****, thinking he's king dick with a beer bottle in his hand. Talk is cheap, if he wants to fight, I'm ready. I'm not gonna talk **** to him and scare him into using his beer bottle as a weapon on me. Drunk people can't fight, so they fight dirty. Even if I dodged his bottle, the two other guys could have thrown their bottles at me during the fight. I took a few steps towards him and he turns his back walks back a little, proceeds to talk ****, then walks away. Why do alcohol companies give you a weapon with their products?
Nice, I'll definitely check that place out at some point. Last time I was in the Bay Area, my uncle took us to a great Afghan restaurant in Fremont...good stuff.
Passed by that place plenty of times. I'm going to have to check it out. It's also down the street from the House of Prime Rib. Go one block over to Polk and you've got a tons of variety: Ozone, Modern Thai, Darbar, Shalimar, Nick's, etc.
Fremont has some good ones. De Afghana Kabob House and Salang Pass Restaurant are both good. However, never try De Afghanan Kabob House in San Francisco. That place is HORRIBLE! It's bad Indian food trying to be passed off as Afghan. I actually think it got shutdown. An interesting side note about Helmand Palace is that it is actually owned by the brother of Afghanistan's current president Hamid Karzai. Apparently, he has a few restaurants throughout the Bay Area. If you go there, they have some really cool artwork and articles hanging on the wall. Take a look at them if you get a chance.
Sounds good. I'm going to hit that one up soon. I'm out in North Beach, so that's a short ride down Union on the 45 bus for me. This thread got me craving some Indian food, so I trekked out the Tenderloin and picked up some lunch from Chutney. Big mistake, as the streets were packed with people for the Columbus Day Parade and Blue Angels (which totally rocked by the way).
