They should just forget about having a 2nd true center and pick another deserving power forward (there are lots). Griffin, Love, Aldridge, Dirk, etc.

I would say 2nd best center so far from what I've seen in the last couple of games. If he keeps his game up and the Rockets are a couple games over .500 by the time selections come around, He has a good shot.

That's EXACTLY what's going to happen.

NBA coaches, I believe, are given some latitude in how they categorize All-Star RESERVES. I like to call this "The Jamaal Magliore Rule".

Someone like Pau Gasol or Tim Duncan will get in as the "backup C".

Marc Gasol or Nene, among others, still have a shot, though.

Yeah this. I mean, if Dirk and KG can play SF in all star games they should have 3 forwards and one center

He's in the official Center category and puttin up 14/10 along with 1spg and 1.8bpg. Even he's ahead of Sammy right now.

Im a huge SammyD fan but he is not an all-star. Gortat would qualify as a better 3rd string all star behind Marc Gasol and Bynum. Kaman is in bad form otherwise he would be up there too.

But yeah SammyD is IMO better then Perkins, Camby, Jordan, Haywood and Blair. And these are all Centers on quality teams.

I think he would be the 6th best center in the east behind Dwight, Noah, Chandler, Bogut and Hibbert. For the moment I hold in higher regards then Hawes and Monroe. Although they are climbing the ranks quickly, they are still too inexperienced. I think Sam is better then Varejao too.

If SammyD lived up to his full potential - he could have been one of the top 10 centers in the league right now. He could have been a hybrid of Chandler and Bynum.

    LOL ... yeah.

In the West, there's Bynum, Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol, Nene, Tim Duncan, Deandre Jordan, Al Jefferson. Probably more I'm not thinking of at the moment. Dalembert will come back down to earth soon enough.

First of all, several here have noted numerous other centers or PF/Cs that deserve consideration in addition to Sammy, based purely on "basketball reasons."

Secondly, because it is a popularity contest, voters look at body of work, not just on-court performance since (this season) December 25th. E.g. Tim Duncan's controversial selection last year.

Thirdly - can't stress the popularity contest issue enough - but I wonder how much of an impact his non-American upbringing has on his popularity with American basketball fans. I don't recall the exact timing, but I believe I read that Sammy was born and raised in Haiti, then spent his later teens in Montreal before playing for Seton Hall. I sometimes feel like there is a dissonance between black American players and black international players. Similar to what some have noted as cultural tension between Africans and African-Americans, in the US.

    http://www.library.yale.edu/~fboateng/akata.htm

There are many that have hurdled this obstacle, such as Hakeem, Dikembe, TD, Manute, etc, but it seems almost as if you have to be a HOFer or a novelty of some sort to gain popularity. How many more All-Star votes and endorsement dollars would they received over their careers if they had exuded more popular black American culture?

Not to veer too much off topic, but, I guess the questions I am posing are: does Sammy exude popular African-American or even American culture? If not, does this have an impact on how "cool" Sammy is? What kind of an impact does a name like "Samuel Dalembert" have on his perception, as opposed to a name like "DeAndre Jordan" or "Kendrick Perkins"?

(To be clear, I support momentum toward inclusiveness and unity between all of my brothers and sisters across the globe. Cultural intricacies like the one I am mentioning here I feel are easy to overlook and sometimes barriers to accepting each other - that's why I bring this up. I don't mean to pose this view as a statement of fact, and would appreciate feedback from others who have an opinion on this. If it needs to move to another thread, so be it.)

I agree. Bynum, Cousins, and M. Gasol for sure. Nene is ahead simply because of popularity. What about Al Jefferson? Pretty sure he has been starting at center. Dally will not make the all-star team unless he starts absolutely playing out of his mind. I'm talking about averaging 20 and 10.

The Bert is lightning it up recently, but there are way better and consistens C's in the west as previously mentioned. Lowry should be in it however;)

I think Lowry, Martin, and Scola have legitimate shots at making the all-star team as reserve players.
