That would make sense, actually. The more I read about Brennan Marion the more I like it. OC at UNLV and innovator of the Go-Go Offense. Great recruiter too. But I'll bet he lands a more high profile job. I predict Phil Longo. He was the OC at Sam during the Southland days when we were putting up 600 yards a game. Air Raid offense. Still good friends with our AD and his family loved living in Huntsville. He just got fired from Wisconsin.
It's a cycle we'll have to live with for eternity. Build something successful as a mid-tier program...lose those that built it. Rinse and repeat.
Rumor on KatFans is that the Incarnate Word coach (Cliff Killough) reached out to a QB recruit that he really likes to make sure he was signing at Sam Houston. Also interesting that 1) we still haven't named a new coach yet and 2) Incarnate Word is still alive in the FCS playoffs. Cause and effect? If we were going to hire someone currently without a college job (Longo, McCown, Hermann) seems like we would have done it already.
Rumor has it the hire will be announced today or tomorrow. My guess is Matt Powledge, Baylor DC. Born and raised in Huntsville, played fullback for Huntsville HS and Sam Houston. Coached RB's at Sam in 2014. Loves the school, loves the town. Won't bail after 1 good season.
Huntsville Hornet. Participated in the Faye Burns Dance Studio recital with his sister. Worked at Tinsley’s. Spends a little more time at the Jolly Fox than he should. He’s gonna crush it
Good hire, I guess. He was our OC during the Southland days when we were putting up 50 points a game.
I know yall have moved on up to the deluxe division in the sky, but can anyone explain the absolute continued FCS dominance of the Montana and Dakota schools? Yes, I just noticed that the championship game is tonight: Montana State vs ND State
Because there's no one left at this point? Honestly, all of the once FCS power teams all left for the FBS. Troy, App St., Sam, etc aren't there anymore. Now that so many of the similarly sized schools have moved to FBS, FCS has gotten watered down. Texas St and Incarnate Word are going after the same pool of players, theoretically. It's just those schools have managed to stay on top, probably because they don't have much instate competition with larger schools. They are the large schools in those areas.
Right, but haven't they kicked ass for a couple of decades now? I could be wrong it just seems like at least 1 of those 5 schools is ranked #1 every year, and 2 others are in the top 5. Where are they getting their players? I just find it strange. If it were schools anywhere but the b.f.e. middle of nowhere frozen north I'd understand it better.
Speaking of this: A missed QB sack causes a 4th and 5 near midfield instead of a 4th and punt for Montana State. They stupidly decide to go for it, fail and NDSU marches down for another TD to close a dominant 21-3 half. Pretty cool that Trey Lance's brother Bryce wears his same number and is the #1 receiver on the team.
They don't have other high-profile schools in their states that they have to compete with. They ARE the high profile schools in their states. In the Dakotas and Montana, the FCS may as well be the SEC. It doesn't take a back seat to the FBS like it does in the P5 states. Hence the move to FBS by Sam.
Don't know anything about him. Looks like he's coached with Longo before. Hope he's ready to coordinate a defense that spends 75% of the game on the field!
