I work in O&G as well and there have been multiple times I see people in the elevators with tattoos showing and it always catches me by surprise. I think that they should cover them up since all it takes is a long-sleeved shirt, which is what most people wear to work anyway. In one case I've even seen one of the people outside of work on several occasions and never even noticed she has a tattoo until I saw it visible in the work place. That's because I don't get bothered by tattoos, I just think you should adhere to a certain level of professionalism. While some may think it doesn't reflect at all, think of it like clothing. What some people may see as work appropriate really isn't. What you wear doesn't change the level of work you give, but it changes perceptions of you.

You're right: they won't say crap to that.

    They just won't hire you.

Yeah, I'd have to assume the same -- no correlation between tattoo-status and performance. But, there probably is a correlation between tattoo-status and success.

And (with a couple of notable exceptions), it looks like most people have no problem with tattoos themselves but are concerned that other people will have a problem with it, and negative externalities will result from that. And, I think we skate on dangerous ground there. The same rationale can be applied to hiring black employees ("nothing against them but my customers won't want to be served by a negro"), or more insidious: people with black-sounding names, or black girls who won't straighten their hair, or black men who wear their pants too low. A tattoo -- and what specifically you chose to ink and where -- is a social marker like those things and people end up prejudging others based on the categories they've slotted them into because of these markers.

But, if it's a tear under your eye instead, the respect goes out the window.

My wife has 1-2 visible tatoos depending on what she wears and she is a succesful executive for a majory company in the financial industry. She will generally wear clothes to cover them up when having interactions with the C*O level but otherwise it doesn't seem to matter.

I don't have any and would never get one for similar reasons mentioned already. My prefereances change all the time and I could never not get annoyed by something permanent on me. I change my hair on a whim, I go through spells of wearing and not wearing my wedding ring, etc.

So... why does she have to cover them, again? ^^
Well, if you're that materialistic and see no real value in a partner for life, that's up to you. Obviously, we know you're not comparing ink to a person. :)

I know you're being funny. But... that's where it ends, with a quick chuckle and then... what else?
It would all change if you were hiring them and you had to choose between two fully and equally qualified peeps... and one had tattoos and the other one didn't. As in another of your statements, if it affects visually what the customers/clients would not like to see, so unless it was a tattoo parlor, you wouldn't hire the tattoo-laden one.
You take your short off to check the mail at work?

Eh, I think, for better or worse, those that disagree with tattoo culture look upon those that have tattoos as someone who has made a bad decision. But, even a common bigot is intelligent enough to understand that race, name, and hair texture are something you're born with.

The good thing about my tattoo is no one can see it unless I want them to.

I think a lot has to do with what it is and how its presented. I've seen people asked to leave clubs because a tat was thought to be gang related and another time when one was in very bad taste.

If you're black or hispanic, go ahead and cover that up.

She doesn't have to she just chooses to because they are generally conservative and 50+ in age at that level and if they dont know her that well yet she wants to make sure there are no distractions in case they are the kind of people who would be distracted by such a thing. Once more well known and a rapport is established she no longer cares.
