Really? That's quite an assumption to make. Cushing is one of my favorite players on the Texans, but I don't think he is going to return to the performance of prior years. However, he will probably get paid closer to his performance from those prior years. Those two things don't add up. I wish him well.

It would actually cost more (in the short term) to cut Cushing than to keep him. $8M cap hit if he's on the roster vs. $10.2M in dead money if you cut him.

I'm going to let it be known right now...Melvin Gordon is going to be the steal of the draft. If available, the Texans should forget about need and draft this guy. I know QB, WR, MLB, DB should come first but damn this kid is legit. There is no QB in this draft that wows me and the WR that do wow me will be off the board. MLB and DB are aplenty in later rounds.

That's not what spotrac is showing, and they've factored in the initial guarantee, 2014 injury only guarantee, and the 2014 option bonus.

Based on his contract numbers, it's showing 10 million in dead money if we cut him, but an 8 million dollar hit if we keep him for the 2015 season.

My wild guess is we sign Shane Vereen in free agency. Patriots drafted him in 2011 during the one and only year O'Brien was the teams Offensive Coordinator. Ridley was also drafted that year but I think Ridley is much more like Foster than Vereen is. If you are the Texans you know Foster is the horse that makes our offense go, but we need someone else that can get the job done when his soft tissue injuries get the best of him. Blue is decent but it appears he will be a 3RB on the roster that plays special teams.

Joseph and Dre will save about $17 million in cap space combined by cutting them. I'd hope to bring them back on more modest short term deals, say $5-7 million each.

Foster should be back. We only save $4 million by cutting him and he is worth that and more.

Also save $3 million by cutting Fitz and $2.5 million by cutting G.Graham. Those are no-brainers.

Altogether I think we'll be looking at approx. $25 million in space to spend, and unfortunately I think Kareem and Mallett are going to eat into a lot of that.

I'm curious to see what kind of money Mallet will command on the market. He had one good game and one bad game (though was playing hurt in the bad game). Is that enough for teams to throw a lot of cash at him? Especially after recent busts in that category like Matt Flynn? I'm hoping we can bring him back for relatively cheap. Then if it turns out he is the real deal then we have 0ur QB but didn't have to pay out the nose for him.

    This.

    We are in good hands.

I can already see him bragging to McNair that this year the team doesn't have $21,000,000 in dead money.

In all seriousness Smith will find a way to screw this up. He will over pay for players and continue to rape the organization. Hell he may even take some advice from Clay Walker and McNair Jr.

I think there will be mutual interest here. Mallet has a chance to sign a big contract, but no team will give him a large signing bonus, meaning he will have to earn it year-to-year with his play.... and given that he's only really been in one system his entire tenure as a pro, he has a high failure rate if he goes to any place that doesn't have the Belicheck/McDaniel/BOB type offense installed.

Only BOB can really know what BOB wants... but unless there's a Jimmy G-like prospect in the draft that we have yet to hear about that entices them enough to use a high round draft pick on... chances are Mallett will be groomed as their #1 guy going forward.

I thought the word on Houston sports radio this past offseason was we run Foster till the wheels come off because it cost too much to bring him back

I would be fine with letting Arian Foster go if we could get someone like Melvin Gordon in the draft.

it would be an option if HOU had a halfway decent qb situation, but clearly that's not the case. (no pun intended)

I agree with you about Gordon but I like Gurley better though. His injury doesn't scare me. I would rather have him... Run Foster into the ground for another year and let Gurley (or Gordon) give him breathers. But as of now I think the Texans may go with an offensive linemen in the 1st round.
