I'll go with Georgia - Ray Charles, mainly because it always reminds me of a scene in Quantum Leap, the best show ever.
if you like dylan and cohen you will love tom waits - the great thing about him is that he has great albums spread accross a 35 year span. there are gems in early, middle and late period. swordfish trombones, heart attack and vine, mule variations, rain dogs - you cant go wrong w/ any of those "i celebrate the mans entire catalogue"
Elton John - The Last Song Yesterday you came to lift me up As light as straw and brittle as a bird Today I weigh less than a shadow on the wall Just one more whisper of a voice unheard Tomorrow leave the windows open As fear grows please hold me in your arms Won't you help me if you can to shake this anger I need your gentle hands to keep me calm `Cause I never thought I'd lose I only thought I'd win I never dreamed I'd feel This fire beneath my skin I can't believe you love me I never thought you'd come I guess I misjudged love Between a father and his son Things we never said come together The hidden truth no longer haunting me Tonight we touched on the things that were never spoken That kind of understanding sets me free Elvis Costello - Veronica Veronica Is it all in that pretty little head of yours? What goes on in that place in the dark? Well I used to know a girl and I could have sworn that her name was Veronica Well she used to have a carefree mind of her own and a delicate look in her eye These days I'm afraid she's not even sure if her name is Veronica Chorus: Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes, Veronica has gone to hide? and all the time she laughs at those who shout her name and steal her clothes. Veronica, Veronica, Veronica Did the days drag by? Did the favours wane? Did he roam down the town all the while? did you wake from your dream, with a wolf at the door, reaching out for Veronica Well it was all of sixty-five years ago When the world was the street where she lived And a young man sailed on a ship in the sea With a picture of Veronica On the "Empress of India" And as she closed her eyes upon the world and picked upon the bones of last week's news She spoke his name outloud again Chorus: Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes, Veronica has gone to hide? and all the time she laughs at those who shout her name and steal her clothes. Veronica, Veronica, Veronica Veronica sits in har favorite chair she sits in quiet and stil when they called her a name that they never get right and that they'l know nobody else will well she used to have a carefree mind of her own with a devilish look in her eye saying you can call me anything you like but my name is Veronica Chorus: Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes, Veronica has gone to hide? and all the time she laughs at those who shout her name and steal her clothes. Veronica, Veronica, Veronica
Heaven for everyone - Queen Time - Alan Parsons Project Creep - Radiohead When you were here before, couldn't look you in the eye You're just like an angel, your skin makes me cry You float like a feather In a beautiful world I wish I was special You're so ****in' special But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doin here? I don't belong here I don't care if it hurts, I wanna have control I want a perfect body I want a perfect soul I want you to notice when I'm not around You're so ****in' special I wish I was special But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doin here? I don't belong here, ohhhh, ohhhh She's running out again... She's running out she runs, runs, runs, runs... runs... Whatever makes you happy Whatever you want You're so ****in' special I wish I was special But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doin here? I don't belong here
Blue - Joni Mitchell Even diehard mopers like Paul Westerberg say that it's almost impossible to touch this one when it comes to sad and depressing albums. Don't Dream it's Over - Crowded House All Shook Down,Sadly Beautiful,Sixteen Blue - The Replacements Whispering Pines - The Band (almost any Band song that Richard Manuel sings gets me down. It's such a shame that such a great voice left the way he did).
of cash's later covers i think his version of "i see darkness" is stronger. Well, you're my friend And can you see Many times we've been out drinking Many times we've shared our thoughts Did you ever, ever notice, the kind of thoughts I got Well you know I have a love, for everyone I know And you know I have a drive, for life I won't let go But sometimes this opposition, comes rising up in me This terrible imposition, comes blacking through my mind And then I see a darkness Oh no, I see a darkness Do you know how much I love you Cause I'm hoping some day soon You'll save me from this darkness Well I hope that someday soon We'll find peace in our lives Together or apart Alone or with our wives And we can stop our whoring And draw the smiles inside And light it up forever And never go to sleep My best unbeaten brother That isn't all I see And then I see a darkness Oh no, I see a darkness Do you know how much I love you Cause I'm hoping some day soon You'll save me from this darkness
Two more great picks! Amen on Manuel. Did you know that Eric Clapton when he heard a Band song with Manuel singing (I think it was "I Shall Be Released" which of course was written by Dylan but put on The Band's debut album) supposedly went to Big Pink and begged to be in The Band? That is how much he thought of Richard Manuel as a singer.
Nick Drake: Fruit Tree - "They'll all know / That you were here when you're gone." He never found fame during life - recorded some beautiful music - and only started gaining a following in the years after he committed suicide in 1974.
Forever Young - Alphaville I'm turning 30 next year, so this song is doubly sad for me. Somebody - Depeche Mode Luckily I'm engaged or I'd shoot myself everytime I heard this song
Oh good lord - how could I forget Nick Drake! All of his songs are sad, especially the entire "Pink Moon" album.
"El Amigo que se fue" - Intocable - sad story for a former band member who died in an accident "Adios, Amigo Bronco" - Bronco - actually a true story of a Bronco fan who got trampled in a concert Oh, and in ENGLISH: "The Wind Beneath My Wings", beaches . EDIT: Turn'em On... Turn'em On... Turn on those SAD songs... Sad Songs They Say... soooo-soooooooo much...
Kind of sad I guess... Sly Stone - Can't Strain my Brain Dinosaur Jr. - Poledo Malcolm Middleton - Devil and the Angel (or any Arap Strap) Replacements - Skyway Talking Heads - Heaven
