I don't remember folks making arguments for McLady, but then again I avoid the GARM. If they were making the same arguments, all I can say is McLady didn't merit them.
The Berkman vs McGrady comparisons (or whatever) are stupid and not relevant. The reasoning that the Astros are using to not sign him are either money or the desire to play other players. My point, as I stated in my prior post, is that talentwise Berkman is still good and above average, and we don't have some super option for 1B, or any position for that matter. And it's not like we are passing on some random first baseman, this is a franchise icon. When it comes to the money, 7 million? We are paying Lyon 5 million. "Rebuilding" does not mean you can't have a guy that makes more than 750k or is older than 24 on your team. It's stupid.
Rebuilding DOES, however, mean that you don't sign a vet at the same position where you have a young prospect that needs playing time. It also says you don't sign a vet for $7M to sit on your bench.
I think Berkman would have settled for a lot less to be in Houston. Having Carlos Lee already taking time at LF/1B really made Berkman a terrible fit.
I can see the comparison. Both were really talented, but they could of gave a little more effort then they did.
All the current Astros need is one of them to get in an on-field altercation against the most despised player on the biggest rival, and they've won over some new fans Or the more regular way, if any of them can play up the "Would Like To Have Beer With" persona, like a couple Brandon Backe types, that can gain support.
well, what I *hope* to see, although it's probably not very common, is the team grab the hearts of fans the way the early-to-mid-90s Astros did: by being young and scrappy and playing their ever-living asses off, and by having a couple of guys rise to elite level while still retaining their blue-collar work ethic and refraining (for the most part, mind you) from the drama-queen diva crap. That's what I would like to see!
@TroyRenck: Hearing that Rockies are getting close on lance berkman. Berkman told me that he would like to play for rockies during alcs
He'd be a perfect fit there. If he gets back to his 2009 form, that trio of Tulo and Cargo with Berkman would probably be the best in baseball.
I still can't get used to it, and every time he changes teams its just going to be more weird. Its really depressing that him and Oswalt were unable to finish out with the Astros, even if was the best for both sides. Truly shows how rare it was to have the tandem of Biggio/Bagwell.
Looks like we'll be seeing a lot of Berkman next year. @CardsInsider Cards announce the signing of OF/1B Lance Berkman to a 1yr deal. www.twitter.com/cardsinsider
Berkman back in the outfield? That should be fun to watch. He is still decent versus righties but is terrible versus lefties.
