Nope, this is the first time it's ever happened. No later round pick has ever outperformed a first round pick. And even if they had, that automatically would've meant that the first round pick is absolutely worthless and taken out back behind the woodshed to be put out of its misery. I volunteer to do the job to Reggie Bush.
Playing DE is not like playing QB. Rookie qbs never put up top numbers in the NFL, there's just too big a learning curve. But rookie ends do. In fact, they do so quite often. Look, I'm not going to write him off just yet, but I will say the jury is still out. I think he has shown just as equal an amount of disappointment as he has potential thus far.
you're dealing with too many absolutes. michael strahan had 5.5 sacks... his first two years combined; same for howie long. bruce smith had 6.5 his first year. imagine labeling any of them busts after their first year. or even 2. and all three guys were 1st or 2nd round picks. i mean, not every player can instantly conform to your own preconceived idea of what constitutes success. MW played hurt, which continues to be either consciously or unconsciously ignored, and you're right - playing DE is not like playing QB; it's much harder to quantify a player's impact when he's playing in the trenches. how does he impact playcalling, audible?; how many blockers does he occupy?; how many times did he blow a play up but not get a credit on the stat sheet?;... i'm not even remotely worried about him beyond the preponderance of nagging injuries this year. i mean, you do realize, he rarely practiced, right? a raw, 21-year old didn't consistently practice... but yeah, let's go ahead and quickly label him something ASAP....
Wow...one of those stats that makes me not feel so concerned after all. I didn't know that. MW does have that Strahan type body so next year, it could be very, very impressive...or even the year after...
people consistently, and incorrectly, label sacks as an individual stat. in ways, it is - the same way a TD pass in an "individual" measure of a QB... which is to say, it's not. it takes a team effort.
No it will not become irrelevant even if MW 'wreaks havoc on opposing QB's', which he has shown very little signs of doing. What VY and Bush do is very relevant because this team could use their offensive production alot more. Actually, it's exactly accurate. And it is entirely relevant. Why don't you go back and take a look at the events in the days immediately prior to the draft? Everything I posted was completely accurate. I'm not holding him accountable. I'm holding the idiots that drafted him over two better players accountable. Once again, we could use the offensive contributions of VY and Bush alot more than the meager defensive contributions MW is giving us. Carr is NOT the answer. VY would have been the perfect choice. But if you're going to stick with a loser like Carr, you've got to take Bush. Imagine all those dinky little 5 yard passes of Carr's going to Bush. Imagine what Bush could have done with those. Once he gets healthy? His 'injury' only came to light prior to the last game of the season. Perhaps to excuse the fact that he had a less than stellar rookie season? So let's see, we've got a player who gives us a mediocre performance all year long due to a nagging 'injury'. So we've got a Morgan Ensberg equivalent on the Texans now. Wow, that's great. I guess. LOL. They has an absolutely horrible 2006 as well. Last place is last place. If a 6-10 record makes you feel all happy inside, more power to you. I'm an Oilers fan. I tried to be a Texans fan. But it's hard to cheer for a team after they made one of the most boneheaded draft screw-ups of recent years. I cheer against the Texans now. It's fun to watch them lose after they so smugly claimed that they knew what they were doing and the fans and all the analysts and everyone else that follows football and didn't agree with their boneheaded choice didn't.
I don't want to screw up your b****fest, but I have to point out that the injury was well documented over the course of the season and not just before the last week.
I feel better than 2-14, and we will feel even better next year. The only way you would be happy is if the Texans drafted the man you lust after. But that did not happen so VY nut lickers like you are now not a part of our fan base. Good. Please go to a different website where you belong. Stay out of the Texans threads if you want them to lose. I think you should be banned from this forum. There is no reason for you to be here.
Would he done something different than he did with the 5 yard passes that Brees was throwing him? Because I saw a lot of them, and I was only impressed by his hands. His ability to break plays was greatly exaggerated.
really? because in 2005, the offense ranked 30th overall; the defense ranked... (wait for it.... just a few more seconds - i promise it'll be worth it....) 31st!!! so, yeah, what they obviously needed a lot more was offense - the defense was a-ok.... really? then please cite your source for this: "Bush's camp played hardball with the Texans at the negotiating table and the Texans ran to Williams to try to stick it to Bush." where did you read that the texans' interest in williams in any way had anything to do with sticking it to bush...? you're acting like they used the pick on jason babin's r****ded little brother, or some ridiculous ****. in reality, had the texans taken bush first, the saints would have taken MW second... that's, let's see... (carry the one...) the very next pick.... (sigh...) wait, no - i mean, (yawn) either/or - take your pick. actually, they went to AJ, who, i suppose, is also a loser since he wasn't able to average 2 fewer yards a catch to match bush's production..... really...? you sure about that...? i'll give you a chance to take it back if you want... no? gonna break out the shovel instead, dig the hole deeper...? because unless the season ended november 13, it's been out there well before the final week of the season. this is my favorite part of the article, right here; i think you'll like it, too: "In all, eight Texans left the game with injuries. And that does not include rookie defensive end Mario Williams, who played through the pain of plantar fasciitis in his right foot for the third consecutive game." which means it had been diagnosed in october... but, no really - keep going... you're not making an ass out of yourself at all... you're awesome...
Okay. I give up. Some of you are bound and determined to love the Texans no matter how badly they screwed up one of the best draft opportunities they could ask for. Hope you enjoy watching a losing football team. Your going to be seeing alot of it for the next several years. I'm going to try to stay out of the Texans threads from now on. The inept team you're stuck cheering for is punishment enough for you Texans fans I guess. It will still be fun to watch them fail week in and week out. Hey, maybe if everything falls just right they can manage to finish next to last next year instead of dead last. Yea baby! Look out world!
Maybe we could win a whole 2 more games to be 8-8 like your pin-up boy. We did have the same home record. You are blinded by your man lust. Good bye, good riddance. Have fun in Tennessee where you belong.
Right. VY is the feel good story of 2006. I dread to think how bad this will get before it gets better...if it ever does get better... If anyone is to blame here, it most certainly is not Mario because he's not responsible for being picked No. 1. That blame has to go to the "Wonderlic" trio. I say blame because they were the ones who placed Mario in a no win situation by picking him too high. The kid was now tagged with a burden that he really shouldn't have had in the first place. That was bad enough but then events escalated out of control once VY became the starter and won a few games particularly the 2 against Houston. Like it or not, the comparisons are now set in stone and will continue to be made until Mario starts playing spectacularly and develops into a force on defense. I find all of the VY "Love and Happiness" going on right now in Tennessee to be a bit disingenious because virtually everyone over there initially wanted the Titans to draft Jay Cutler. This was Bud's call all the way which infuriates me more than the fact that VY plays for a division rival. At any rate, VY has won over his critics which is a far cry from anything that David Carr has done in 5 years. Dude, you make an excellent point. I happen to believe that the long years of losing and playing 2nd banana to the Cowboys had the effect of sapping away most of the fan's passion for the Oilers. I know that by the time they finally packed up and left, I was emotionally spent and didn't really give damn one way or the other. I'm certain that I was not alone in this feeling. If what you say here is correct that the question becomes whether this organization is the right one to make up those two "steps" and succeed in passing the Titans but then, that's always been the question in Houston.
Damn straight. And I admit they screwed it up, too. If you think it's all because they passed on VY, that's just, well, sad. Sweet!! And, when the Texans start winning in the fall of 2008, can you still stay out? I won't miss you.
YOUR DAMN RIGHT I DO! I will always stand by my teams, no matter how stupid they act. And while your at it, why don't you just jump off this board all together. Hell, the rockets had to have done something to piss your bandwagon ass off. Rashard, Gay, the handling of Olajuwon's later years. Isn't that enough for you to cry about and quit watching a team. Hell, I should be sorry for being an ass to you, but honestly, nothing pisses me off more than a so called fan who quits on a team. Go join the pansies who fell in love with the bulls cause Michael Jordan was there but seem to have dissappeared since he left. Jump on the ol' Brady bandwagon while he's winning in Patriotville. But make damn sure you don't root for a team that makes a mistake, cause lord knows you've never made one. And if by chance your team does make a mistake, start crying about it and whine and b**** and moan long enough to realize YOUR A TOOL
Dwight Freeney had 29 tackles and 5.5 sacks on the year. Therefore, he sucks and I wouldnt want him on my football team.
The Astros and the Rockets have made plenty of mistakes. (The Rockets sticking with Jeff Van Gundy comes to mind as one of the worst.) But I still love them. As i've said many times. I was never a Texans fan. But I wanted to be and tried to be.
that's cool, just don't come screaming "I Love the Texans" when they right the ship. (and if you actually looked critically, not blindly, at the last draft, you would see that we are beginning that process.) All the lows make the highs even better.
is this you're way of saying, "i could not have been more wrong about the MW injury and the timing of it. now that i've been properly informed, maybe the fact he WAS injured for more than half the season and wasn't able to practice much, if at all, has me reconsidering things and i hereby promise not to make any more declarative statements about a 21 year old kid and instead go troll titan boards... until they prove to not be anything special, at which time, i'll just go to my fallback team, the dallas cowboys"...?
