I'm not sure how he could have helped. He was dealing with an officer from a different department. Other than talking to him some more (and probably ending up causing the officer to take even more time to write the ticket), I don't know what he could've done.

I don't know if it was racial motivated or not....Since the Moats family believe so, I'll take their word because they experienced it. To me....seems like a young d!ck head officer abusing his power.........again. These new officers truly forget that they WORK for citizens; to serve and protect. They get a badge and gun and go buck wild.

This was a terrible....my prayers go out to that family. I wouldn't wish this on a ememy....could only imagine what Ryan and the grandfather was going through at the time.

I'm black and been very fortunate when it has come to law enforcement and racial issues. I've been pulled over quite a bit and dealt with a lot of pricks and most of the those pricks were BLACK lol (I hate highway patrol). I support the police and the job they have to do, but the new breed of officers are a joke....complete joke

I'm not going to defend this guy because all he had to do was to step into the hospital to determine the situation. But, when you deal with all the a*h*s out there all the time you can help but treat everybody the same way and the normal citizen may get in the crossfire like this. If you want to see the abuse of power or power hungry, go to the courthouse, those guys are worse. Remember these guys do put their life on the line (see Oakland police) .

If I saw it correctly, the cop turned right from the main lanes of traffic and across a clearly marked right turn lane. :D

I know Moat's sister-in-law and she just emailed me saying that they just finished going to the funeral service and said that the family is having to relive it through the news.

Cop is going to get what he deserves and exchange his badge for an orange apron at Home Depot. Probably doesn't deserve working there either.

This is very aggravating because it could have happened to any of us. What an As#h0le cop!...No common sense, empathy, or discretion whatsoever...Moats showed a lot of restraint to this emotional conflict (Better than I could have.)...I am sorry for his loss and his family...

The Dallas PD website states that the department shares our disappointment and outrage regarding the actions of Officer Powell.

If that is anything other than lip service, they will hand him his walking papers.

According to Chief Kunkle, the DPD has started the process to "terminate" Powell. Presumably they mean "fire", but maybe they've got something involving Arnold Schwartzenegger in mind.

I can understand this, so generally I'm fairly tolerant of officers even if they do seem like assholes to me. But at the very least this officer could've apologized afterwards to the family. It's one thing to get caught up in the heat of the moment. But quite different when afterwards you still feel like you "did the right thing". When you're obviously in the wrong.

The fact that he still feels that he made the right decision shows just how much of a dick he is. Or that he's not capable of good decision-making.

Yes they do and it is their choice...find another job if they don't like it.

    No sympathy from me.

Police Officer in Moats Case Resigns

The Dallas police officer who kept NFL running back Ryan Moats from seeing his dying mother-in-law reportedly has resigned.

The officer, Robert Powell, resigned today, his attorney told the Associated Press.

Powell had been placed on paid administrative leave following the incident, in which Powell lectured Moats, threatened to arrest him and ticketed him in a hospital parking lot after Moats's vehicle went through a red light en route to the hospital. Moats tried to explain to Powell that his mother-in-law was near death but, after being delayed approximately 13 minutes by Powell, Moats did not arrive at her bedside until after she'd died.

Dallas police officials had issued apologies and had said that Powell acted improperly during the traffic stop.

Moats and his wife said during a nationally televised interview this week that Powell had pointed his gun at Moats's wife, Tamishia, during the incident. Powell reportedly had told his superiors that he'd drawn his gun but hadn't pointed it. The Moatses said they would accept Powell's apology.

The Dallas Morning News had called for Powell's dismissal in an editorial.

According to the Morning News, Powell issued a written statement today through his attorneys.

"With a heavy heart and great sadness, I resigned from the Dallas Police Department this morning," Powell said in the written statement, according to the Morning News. "I made this decision in the hope that my resignation will allow the Dallas Police Department, my fellow officers, and the citizens of Dallas to better reflect on this experience, learn from the mistakes made, and move forward."

Powell indicated he still hoped to speak to the Moats family to apologize directly, and he apologized to fellow officers.

"I have sincere respect and admiration for the men and women of the Dallas Police Department and the work they perform daily," Powell said in his written statement, according to the Morning News, "and I wish them well."

Powell had apologized to the Moats family in the form of a previous written statement. Tamishia Moats said during an appearance Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that she hoped to hear directly from Powell.

Powell said during an interview with a Dallas television station this week that he'd handled the situation improperly and regretted his actions. He said during the TV interview that he feared being fired because of the incident.

He should resign. A police officer is a position of trust. In their time of need, people turn to police for help. Instead of compassion, the guy was a d!ck.

To quote the Donald, "You're fired!"

PS I bet by resigning the guy has a better chance of landing another cop job.
