And all the hard drugs over the years.. And the fact that he got sh**t faced drunk the night before he was supposed to meet with the Panthers about possibly being #1 overall, and had to cancel the interview over some combination of still being drunk/hungover.

He's a real dedicated, stand-up, sober, serious guy, that Ryan Mallett.

It's a well known fact that he has cleaned up his act.
Do you think OB would have taken him otherwise?

Didn't Mallet used to get drunk when he was in college? Which is why his draft stock fell and when drafted in 3rd round?

Damn, he sounds just the way I use to be. At 43 ...I can still kick ass.

He has talent and he does know football. But he is not mentally ready for the game. Which is why he got traded. He was a stud in college, a very good football player. The problem with him is he did got arrested on charges of public intoxication. He got drunk so many times in college. I don't blame him though, because every college guy does that. But that really tells why he is not mentally ready for the game. He is mature now,(I hope so) coming from a a great organization like the Patriots and learning from Tom Brady and Belichick. Let's just hope he learned from his mistakes and he is mentally ready now and hope Bill O'Brien works with him good.

He got traded because the guy he is backing up is kinda good, and the patriots weren't about to resign him when they drafted a clipboard carrier in the second round.

The conjecture in this thread is a tad overwhelming.

He's the best you have. I don't how it will turn out. But this was the right move for the Texans this year.

Has gotten 0 amount of trouble in his 3 yrs in the NFL.

Maybe/Just Maybe Mallett has grown up from when he was 23 yrs old.

Since OB took him right out of college, a couple of months after the Panthers incident, the answer is pretty clear, and not at all hypothetical.

He's had the lowest pressure job in the history of the planet for the last 3 years. Let's see what happens if he starts, and loses, 3 or 4 in a row.

Dude could slam down a couple rails of coke before a game and he would still be better than Keenum as a backup QB. Good trade.

I'm fine with him as a placeholder until they find someone you'd like to build your team around. Just don't expect him to be more than he is.

Has OB commented on the acquisition yet?

No, because if he was good how the Patriots expected him to be he would have stayed as the number 2 quarterback. But he got out played by a rookie. That means he has mental issues. If he got his head right and played his butt up, that would have never happened. But they traded him because he wasn't good enough. But like I said he has talent, but he is not mental ready for the game.

Isn't his contract almost up? It's not like anyone is replacing Brady in the next 3 seasons. Seems perfectly plausible they felt he would walk for a shot at a starting job at seasons end anyways. Get what you can when you can.

I'm all for the move as it's low-risk, and Case wasn't right as the back-up or the future.
However, it is telling that the same NE Patriots that spent a 3rd round pick and had the player on their team the last few years used a #2 on a guy to replace him and accepted a conditional 7th in return. Realistically, we can't expect much.

We have no idea what he is. You don't know if he's really tamed his demons. We don't know if he's a legit nfl starting qb or one that can lead the team for the next 5-7 years.

You're drawing a lot of conclusions...Mallett was going to walk at the end of the year because there is no reason for him to continue being Brady's back up for the rest of his career. The Patriots had to make a move whether they liked him or not.
