The running game isn't going to be there. We'll need more than a game manager. Our defense might be improved but this is still the modern NFL. You need to score.
I read a article that Fitzpatrick was picked up because the offense will be similar to the one he was in with the Bills. In my opinion this Texans team has the most talent he's played since he was with the Rams. I don't look for him to set the world on fire but end up being a lot better than expected.
Our new starting QB is #1 in these rankings! http://wallstcheatsheet.com/sports/nfl-the-7-worst-quarterbacks-set-to-start-in-2014.html/?a=viewall
Of course teams reach for QBs - because if you hit, the payoff is far greater than anything else you could have spent that 1st round pick on. You can always point to the random fluke like Russell Wilson or Tom Brady and you can always use scary words like "guaranteed" to make it sound like 1st round picks used on QBs are a waste. But statistical analysis tells you otherwise. Far more 1st round picks are successful than 4th round picks. If you fail on a 1st round pick, you're going to suck. But if you're counting on Tom Savage, you're likely going to suck anyway - it's just different magnitudes of sucking since you have Clowney. Either way, you're unlikely to win anything of note unless you hit on the tiny fluke success rate of scrub QBs. You're much better off taking the 20-30% chance of finding a franchise QB in the 1st round and setting yourself up for a decade of being able to at least build around something. If you fail, then you repeat again and again until you find the QB. Then you build around that. Otherwise, you're just spinning wheels.
Just curious what everyone would consider a "successful" season for Fitzpatrick. His career highs are as follows: Yards - 3832 TD - 24 INT - 16 If he posts say... 4000 yards, 28 TDs, 14 INTs. How would everyone respond to that? Keep him or go with Savage/Keenum? To put it in context, Matt Schaub's best numbers: Yards - 4770 TDs - 29 Ints - 15
And if you don't have a 1st round grade on any of the QBs? Drafting a guy with the #1 pick when he should be go in the third round isn't going to make him better.
All of this is very true, but what if the Texans truly didn't think there was a QB in this year's draft worthy of using a 1st round pick? Do you draft a QB in the 1st round just because you need one? We are going to have a mid to high 1st round pick next year, why not draft your guy then when the class is (supposed to be) much better?
Certainly - this has gone a bit off-track. If the Texans didn't think any of the QBs in this year's draft have a realistic chance to be franchise QBs, then they shouldn't draft one. But they shouldn't be avoiding them because they aren't "guaranteed" to be franchise QBs or any of the other ridiculous claims that get made about only using #1 picks on sure things. Two issues there - one, you have no idea what kind of pick the team will have next year, or who will be available. The only time you have your pick of the litter is when you have the #1 pick. Any sure-fire type QB will be gone on the top 5. Second, the "supposed to be" is a problem. Players are always rated higher early on before people start picking apart their games. Just look at what happened in this year's draft and how it was viewed a year ago. If you're counting on "oh, we can just get a QB next year", I think you're making a big mistake - that assumes, of course, you felt any of this year's QBs had a reasonable chance to be a franchise QB.
It's just people looking to be pessimistic, most likely people who think that football is a one on one game played between QB's.
Something is going on with the QB situation. Bob says the backup is still up for grabs and he might bring in another vet. Check HC sports section today. Interestingly, Ryan Mallet did not report to camp. Trade in the works?
Where do you see this? I imagine that the #2 QB spot is still up in the air for Savage/Keenum. Mallet did report to camp, and has been limited to just passing drills because of a knee problem.
You are picking stats from different seasons. Fitz best QBR is 83. For comparison Matt's best season was 99.
I don't want him throwing the ball enough for him to have anywhere near 4k yards...or even 3500 honestly. To me a successful year from Fitz is 3100 yards and 10 or fewer interceptions, basically Russell Wilson numbers.
Houston Chronicle sports today, in the comments section under the article about Bob not decided on the back up. Didn't know about the knee problem, it wasn't mentioned.
