No kidding. Thank goodness for modern statins like Lipitor. I'd be a goner by now were it not for them. You wouldn't believe my numbers, after I had gone many years without getting it checked. I inherited a genetic problem from my Dad. My cholesterol was 635 and my triglycerides were over 1200, but I digress. I certainly agree that, as wrong as I think it is to even think about such things regarding qualifications for President, being a non-Christian is a hurdle.

Call me crazy, but I don't consider those of the Jewish faith to fall under that category, as I think you are using it. I think we could elect a Jewish President like Feingold. Now, if we are talking about a Hindu, Buddhist, or Muslim candidate, for example, it would be extremely difficult, especially considering the current climate in the country.

Well, Leiberman has all the charisma of a constipated water buffalo. He was a poor choice, but not because of his religion, imo. Lots of things about that election went wrong. Gore contributed to Gore's downfall, more than anything else. He should have had Clinton campaign for the ticket. Stupid.

What happened after the election was an American tragedy, but it shouldn't have been that close.

Oh my! You definitely need to keep a watch on your cholesterol, which undoubtedly you do. I will say that statins, like Lipitor are amazing. They are almost too good to be true in what they do to control cholesterol. I am not a medical doctor, but you should definitely look into Vytorin. I hear that Vytorin is the statin of all statins. The only problem with Vytorin is that most insurance companies do not want to cover it.

Is that why you wouldn't vote for him or is it a policy thing? Thanks in advance. Et cetera.

As for the rest of it, I didn't even know Feingold was a Jew. Is he? I know his name's Jewish but I don't know what his faith is. Is that important? And, if so, isn't that stupid? And (double) if so, what's the point of "America?"

I was serching for some sort of "definitive" statement of his "Jewishness" in the religious sense. I could find nothing to that effect but I did see that he is twice divorced and is currently single. Personally, this don't mean anything to me but they are both traditional presidential red flags.

I'd be intrested to know if people who think "Jewishness" would hurt him think "ethnic Jewishness" or "religious Jewishness" would be the issue?

Anyone who is willing to break party ranks and vote their concience is automatically someone I'd view as a candidate I'd actively support. I am, however, disheartened by recent trends and wonder whether that characteristic makes others less willing to block cheap personal attacks, ala McCain in South Carolina.

Many pundit sites list him as Jewish but on his website http://feingold.senate.gov/index.html I find no mention of religion at all.

We should be a beacon of light to the rest of the world for our successful experiment with equality, right? We're the experts. We should teach everybody else what's okay with regard to ethnicity, gender and freedom of religion, BUT our voters won't elect non-males or non-Christians. What do you think, texxx? basso? Jorge? Is it okay to elect a Jew? A woman? A black? A gay guy? Thanks in advance. Your credibility is not only on the line -- it's pretty much gone.

To be fair, the reason why countries like the UK (and now Germany) have elected women is simply because of their parliamentary system. Generally, in parliamentary systems people vote more on straight up party platforms and ideology rather than potential prime ministers. In India for example, the Congress party won because of anger that new money flowing in had not reduced the income inequality. This happened despite the fact that they were on the verge of electing an Italian-born non-Indian to power. When I was there, no one particularly was worried about that until after it had become clear that the Congress Party could form a government. Same with Germany. People aren't voting for Schroeder or Markel, they're voting for distinct differences in party ideology. (liberal European economics and social policy v. conservative free-market reform)

That being said, it really is sad that we havent elected a woman or minority yet. But unfortunately, we're not the only ones and this is a phenomenon that has plagued the world.

BJ - don't assume that I don't like Jewish people. That is simply not true. In fact, I was a groomsman in a Jewish wedding a week ago. I even got to hold up one of the 4 poles of the chupah during the ceremony. I have nothing against Jews. I have problems with Feingold's policies.

Remember, beej, I'm a self-described "country club Republican" - lower my taxes and I vote for you! ;)

This is your main issue then, right? You'll vote for lower taxes over, say a balanced budget, lower debt, national security, et cetera... As long as your taxes are lower, you're okay with wars that increase the terrorist threat against the US, right? Or, say, an unprecedented debt to be passed on to future generations, yes? After all, as long as it lowers your taxes... I get it. You're a greedy b*stard. Answer me this then...

    1. Would you vote for a woman, minority or homosexual for president if they reflected your greedy values?

    2. If so, would you identify those who wouldn't for the bigots that they are? And, if not, would you admit your own bigotry?

    3. On a side thing, what's your objection to Russ Feingold? I know you don't like to get into details (after all, that's where you start looking stupid -- it's understood) but you haven't said a thing against him except that you wouldn't vote for him. Say why.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE.

People from Waco who drive F1-fitties don't get in to country clubs.

Do you think Cheney and Rumsfeld are 'neoconservatives?' I'd be interested to understand how you put them in that group. :)

It's hilarious when people try to use this type of logic.

"hey I'm not racist against black people. I have a black friend."

"I'm not racist against muslims, my best friend's dog's brother's master is Muslim. "

And how many Catholics have we had as president since?

it is not about having one .. to say we had one
It is about a mindset than ANYONE can be president
it is what made the USA great . .the everyday man or woman
could work hard and become anything

that is simply no longer true
To be president .. . I would have to gain money now.
Work my son into politics. . and hope he is good and popular
and perhaps in 60 - 70 yrs his son will have a shot
more imporant than legacy .. is pure and simple . . MONEY
    Corp MONEY esp

Part of Clinton's popularity is that he had an EVERY MAN type story
Gore and Bush . . . had it handed down to them
