Rush: Steinbrenner a “Cracker” who Helped Blacks and fired a lot of white people.

I'm the furthest thing from a Rush supporter, but I didn't think the comment was all that bad. He said he helped to make a lot of African-Americans very rich. Yeah, the threw in that Steinbrenner fired a lot of "white coaches", but the comments were largely complimentary of Steinbrenner.

Because the white Steinbrenner didn't make anyone a millionaire. Those black players who put in all the hard work training, time, and developed their skill as well as had enough good fortune and talent, made themselves millionaires.

To attribute their success to the cracker, GS is racist. If GS hadn't hired those players they would have been hired by another team.

 

He didn't say that he helped make them rich. He said that he made them rich.

I think it's controversial because he turned something that had no racial element to it into a racial topic. This is a pattern with him because it riles up his listeners into an "us vs. them" mentality.

 

What black players did he sign to much higher salaries than market rates?

 

It sounded more like an argument against the "us v them". A prime example of "the man" not being a racist.


My overall view is if people are seriously considering this a racist comment they have way to easy of a life.

 

Every free agent the Yankees have signed in the last 15 years has been payed more than what the rest of the MLB teams would be willing to pay. this raises the market price of all players.

GS changed the market.

 

Not necessarily true - the Yankees didn't go salary crazy until fairly recently. In the 1990's, they were built off of homegrown talent. And even then, rather than sign players above market value, all they do is sign a lot of these players while other teams can only sign a few. The Yankees don't tend to be the team that gives the groundbreaking crazy contracts like A-Rod or Joe Mauer or Mike Hampton got - those are the ones that cause the overall salary scale to rise.

Besides all that, the Yankees raising their payroll didn't cause other teams to raise their payroll - that's why the Yankees are so out of whack with with everyone else now. So that didn't necessarily benefit all the other players out there - it benefits the players the Yankees sign, but it doesn't really have the effect of dragging up the overall salary scale because no other team can afford that strategy.

I do, do you? He didn't make them anything. They put in the work, developed the talent, made the decisions, and they made themselves rich. Players on that team could have been signed to other teams.

GS didn't make them practice for hours a day, go on training programs since they were kids. That, luck and natural talent is what made them millionaires. GS had a part in it, because he paid some salaries. But he didn't make them anything. The players themselves did.

 

I don't believe that's always the case, but they would have still been millionaires.

but that wasn't Steinbrenner though. It was when he was banned from baseball (1990-93) and the following couple of years that the Yankees allowed young players like Rivera, Bernie Williams, Derek Jeter, and Andy Pettite develop.
