Some of the comments in here are way more nutty than what Rush said. "the bigot conservative victim card"
Who didnt see something like this coming ? ESPN wanted him for a reason, and I guess this was it. Maybe people should start sending in complaints everytime they see that fat windbags yellow toothed face on television. I just feel sorry for people who have big screens and have to see him that big and close. Thats when you dont want HD TV.
People root for McNabb and want him to succeed because he is a nice guy who has a lot of heart (ie) played with a broken ankle, why Limbaugh had to add race is simply idiotic.
McNabb Shocked At Limbaugh Comments PHILADELPHIA -- Donovan McNabb isn't looking for an apology from Rush Limbaugh, who said he was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed. It's too late for that. "He said what he said. ... I'm sure he's not the only one that feels that way but it's somewhat shocking to acutally hear that on national TV," the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback said of Limbaugh at a news conference Wednesday. "An apology would do no good because he obviously thought about it before he said it." http://www.theredzone.org/news/showarticle.asp?ArticleID=377
If you strip away the inflammatory remarks made by the author of the column, here is what Rush actually said: "I think the sum total of what you're all saying is that Donovan McNabb is regressing, he's going backwards. And...I'm sorry to say this, I don't think he's been that good from the get-go. "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well; I think there is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn't deserve. The defense carried this team... "I think he got a lot of credit for the defensive side of the ball winning games for this team." I agree with Rush. Think criticially here for a moment, instead of accepting the knee-jerk reaction. McNabb is a slightly above average quarterback whose team is having a terrible year. He has looked better in the past due in part to a strong defense and a conservative offense that doesn't lead to a lot of turnovers. The media makes a large investment in him because there are not a lot of *high quality* black quarterbacks in the league. This is no different than the media making an investment in Yao Ming due to the lack of Asians in the league or making an investment in Jason Williams of the Grizzlies or even John Stockton due to the lack of white point guards in the league. Do you think Keith Van Horn or Wally Sczerbiak are deserving of all of the media attention that they receive? Do you think race plays any role in how the media positions a story? The answer to both of these questions is obvious. The McNabb situation has many parallels, and that is what Rush was highlighting. Kudos to Rush for having the courage to see beyond the guilt-inspired "I'm going to be outraged anytime I see race used in an argument" crowd's arguments. Remember, people, Rush's job is to create controversy and ratings for ESPN. He has succeeded.
You should have heard Rome's take on all this during his radio show today. It is one that I actually agree with. I will try to summarize: Does this comment make Rush Limbaugh a racist? No. Does this comment put Rush Limbaugh in the same league as John Rocker, Al Campanis & Jimmy the Greek? No. Does this prove that Al Franken was correct when he titled his book "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot"? You betcha.
I suppose I'll add this to the long list of race related things I'll have explained to you. He enjoys ridiculing criticism of his comments by portraying his critics as users of the concept that if you're conservative you're a bigot. Kind of like if the wonderful if you oppose Bush means you're just a hater card. Just two of the wonderful tactics used by conservatives to defend their stupidity. Carry on Mr C.
Let's get several things straight: 1. For starters, he never said that black quarterbacks can not play or that McNabb is not a good quarterback because he happens to be black. 2. It is a truism that black quarterbacks tend to get more favorable press. It is a natural thing among the media (and by God, I'm guilty of it) to want black quarterbacks to succeed and prove their detractors wrong. 3. And that anything related to race in this country is not open for discussion. I just don't understand why the hell everyone is getting their panties in a bunch.....it's sports for chrissake!
Uh, I rarely ever talk about race in here, so I doubt you have a "long list" of stuff explained to me. Just keep making stuff up, as usual.
Is it a truism that McNabb hasn't played as well as people give him credit for, which is basically what he said about his play?
"All this has become the tempest that it is because I must have been right about something," Limbaugh said. "If I wasn't right, there wouldn't be this cacophony of outrage that has sprung up in the sports writer community." -- Rush Limbaugh This is ridiculously stupid and illogical, even by the lowered Limbaugh standards. Line of reasoning: People raised hell about the Nazis, so the Nazis must have been right!
Well...I don't really factor into the equation if the guy is black or not if they are a QB. I generally pull for underdogs to succeed. I don't subconsciously pull for the black guy cuz he is black. I go for the guy or the team that doesn't have the chance or busts their ass based on how hard they play and not their talent. Anyhow, I have no clue why you decided it is a natural tendency for the media to want black QBs to succeed. I mean they rip everyone pretty equally if they suck. See McNabb's 1st 2 games, see Kordell, see Quincy Carter. So don't give me this BS that the media is pulling for black QBs to succeed. I don't think anyone was pulling for Carter...they were just calling the guy a bum. Rush's comments were small-minded, but not racist, and only got as much run as they did because he is a white guy commenting on a black guy and because they were completely illogical. Also, how much run would it get if some black commentator said John Lynch and Brian Urlacher only get props in the media because they are white and the media wants a white guy to succeed? In my opinion, certainly not as much even if it not true in the slightest. These comments should be treated for what they are....stupid commentary...not racist commentary.
Just watching the way the media treats Quincy Carter should be proof enough that Rush's assertion is flawed at best. That said, when did it become a crime in this country for someone to have an opinion that many people don't agree with?
The problem is that Rush's central thesis is flawed. This idea that McNabb is overhyped because the media wants to see black quarterbacks succeed could only be true if other black quarterbacks are also overhyped. But we don't see Quincy Carter overhyped by anyone by Jerry Jones. Steve McNair is arguably underhyped and has been through his career. You could argue that the hype went into overdrive with Kordell Stewart in his early NFL time (when he was Slash), but the media hasn't propped him up since then, even when his team has had some success (though now that he's with the Bears, it's unlikely his team will see much success). Certainly people like Anthony Wright were not overhyped (if anything. Wright was underhyped and more deserving of a spot on the Cowboys roster than someone like Clint Stoerner who made the team). And you could point to a list of white QBs who were overhyped by the media well in excess of their success. People like Jake Plummer, Tim Couch, Vinny Testeverde, Brian Greise, Chad Hutchinson (locally), etc. even Peyton Manning, etc. to a degree, who have received praise and hype in excess of their skills and success. I just think the media likes stars, so they attach themselves to certain players and talk them up. But I don't think it falls along racial lines.
I don't think his comments were racist...just wrong. Sorry for the double post, the edit function is down...
