It's just a gentleman's bet. It's just for pride and to get myself in good shape.

By the way, worst comes to worst, I'm sure you'll be able to go after several 5ks before your friend completes an Ironman, unless he's already a major hoss. I can do each of the 3 components of it separately, provided I work myself back up to marathon distance running, but all in one day? Insane.

Thanks for the pointers Pipe. I'll definitely check out those message boards.

btw, 5th out of 1000+ is damn impressive, I don't care who you're racing against.

There was a 5k run here in Houston a couple of months ago for a handful of Catholic schools. The winner ran it in 17 minutes.

    It got me to thinking.....

I can run a mile in 5 minutes... but I can't keep that pace up for three miles (in my current condition).

    Good luck.

Don't marathon runners eat lots of carbs the day before like spaghetti and such?

And I'm sure you already know, but just a reminder not to do the bumping the night before.

I know. There's no way in hell he can complete the Iron Man. It's not for mere mortals. To even compare any random 5k to the Iron Man seems a little ridiculous to me.
