Robert Gates has done an amazing job here at Texas A&M. I can only hope he can do the same at a much higher level.

What's that definition of insanity? Doing the same things over and over and expecting a different outcome?

He was kept by Clinton for a year or two, that means he is no extremist on the right. It can only get better with the resignation of Rumsfeld.

I didn't read it but this month's Texas Monthly has a cover article on Gates. It's title is 'Can This Man Save Texas A&M?'.

(when I graduated from A&M the then president turned his back on the girl that had sued to get into the Aggie Band rather than the traditional handshake....class dude)

Gates first move as secretary of defense...

free candy bars for all non-terrorists in Iraq!

    WOOHOO!

At the end of the day, if your not holding a candy bar...then you're a terrorist.

    WE'VE WON!!!!

Not true - it's an admission of failure by the Bush Administration. If anything, it would have simply reduced core GOP base turnout from people who have endlessly defended Rumsfeld and were slapped in the face.

Holding off on the resignation until after election day was the proper political move for the GOP. The GOP argument that Dems couldn't be trusted with Iraq can't be made if you just fired the guy you put in charge of it, after Dems ranted for years to get rid of him. It just tells the world that the Dems were right on him.

Dems whine and bash Rumsfeld constantly, then whine and bash Bush for replacing him. Does it ever stop?

Dems whine and bash Bush for replacing him? The ones I've talked to are praising it. Perhaps you should surf sites other than worldnetdaily for your news.

Neither party is a unilateral bloc. I'm sure there were Democrats who supported Rummy before and after he resigned. The media only reports negativity. The sooner you realize this, the better you truly understand both sides points of view.

If he replaced him prior to the election or admitted that he was going to, there would have been cries of outrage at his "November Surprise."

    This is how it works:

Bush backs Rumsfeld => He gets bashed to no end
Bush sacks Rumsfeld => He gets bashed for flip flopping

If Rumsfeld stepped down pre-midterm => Bush is pulling a stunt to save the election
Rumsfeld steps down after midterm => Rummy just taking the fall for this election and Bush wanted to hire another crony anyway

Anything he says can and will be used to bash him

Who’s unhappy that he got rid of Rumsfeld?? I have no criticisms at all for Bush for getting rid of Rumsfeld. Bravo Bush!

Any criticism aimed at the neocons is OK by me. Glad to see him go.

Now, what does that mean for his good friend Cheney? Is this the end of the Cheney Administration? The beginning of Bush I Part 2?
