If it'll take Sony and Microsoft 3 more years to deliver new systems, this could really pay off for Nintendo.

I don't know if I want to buy something from Japan especially with these radiation concerns. I have a dog and a job and I have to worry about these things.

I'm guessing it will be in the 350-400$. They already set their new floor with the 3ds coming in at 250.

I know Sony and MS are pushing the "long console cycle" idea, and I don't necessarily oppose it. But I'd be surprised if we went 10 years without a successor to either console, even if Nintendo did nothing. With this console seemingly targeting late 2012, I wouldn't be surprised to see a new console from one of the other two by 2013 or maybe early 2014.

Already getting a lot of games that are being "held back" back by consoles.
Certainly a couple of ways to gauge how powerful a console is. But this seems slightly off to me.

The GC is more or less on par with the PS2, even better in some areas, and doesn't compare too badly with the Xbox (1). Wii is basically "2 Gamecubes taped together." Spec-wise, it definitely seems better than the original Xbox (more ram, better CPU, faster GPU, etc.). Its GPU doesn't support shaders though (AFAIK?), so developers might be able to get a little better results from the Xbox. Lot of Wii games that looks worse than Xbox games (or even PS2/GC games), but I think the hardware is pretty capable.

This might be a larger gap, although without a little more information (what does "significantly" mean?), still doesn't seem that big of a shift in Nintendo's philosophy IMO. Might be interesting to see if the go the "small and energy efficient" route again. That's partly why I think the Wii was so underpowered. The specs were a bit more impressive when you took that into consideration (although still largely disappointing IMO).

Nintendo's probably just looking for cheap, reliable, and energy efficient parts, and it turns out that their options include components that would produce hardware significantly more powerful than the PS3/360 (which it should). To get something less powerful could even cost more, depending on the circumstances.

I've been racking my brain and I can't come up with a good reason to have an HD screen in the controller. I mean, anything you display on that controller will draw your eyes away from the TV, right? So in game terms it would have to come during a break in the action (or whatever you were doing), so why not just go ahead and throw whatever it is up on the screen anyway?

If it was a driving game, you might could have the rear view mirror displayed there...but I'd rather see it in the corner of my screen. Perhaps for Final Fantasy type games you could have menu selections done on the controller screen rather than on the TV so you never have to interrupt the action...but that would be annoying looking back and forth from your hands to the TV constantly. I don't know, seems really unnecessary to me.

Oh man, I lost so many potential study hours in college due to Goldeneye. I wish I could get my N64 working so I could fire that game up again.

The HD screen would be good for Madden, the playbook could go on there.

Is it sad I still have mine along with a separate CRT TV for playing Duck Hunt with the gun?

You read my mind, that's exactly what I thought about when I heard a screen was gonna be on the controller.

More updated rumors today. I'll just link to NeoGAF since it is easier than linking to 10+ different sources (especially since the NeoGAF thread will be updated):

Some specs, more info about the controller, how long publishers have had devkits, etc.

Specs are about what you'd expect. Depends on what R700 GPU this will be based on though. 4850/4870 is a pretty good upgrade over 360/PS3 (that would definitely be "significantly" more powerful). Although new consoles from Sony and MS would likely have GPUs significantly more powerful than that. And Nintendo could be going for some of the low-to-mid range version of that architecture, instead of the high-end. RAM is low, though would likely be fast. CPU doesn't sound special (on par with current systems...potentially worse).

The spec rumors have been a bit all over the place. Wouldn't be surprised if those were wrong, and Nintendo went a different route (maybe a CPU+GPU combo from AMD). Hopefully more RAM.

The rest of it sounds crazy and exciting I guess. Could just end up being untrue rumors (hehehe...what if this all was? Though I think some things probably are true). Love these new console rumors.

With games around $60....console gaming is pretty much dead to me.
